When You Find Your People

Sunday, June 4

Opening Question

Do you know what it’s like to be part of a crowd, but you feel alone? Tell us about it.

Scripture

“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.” ‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭2‬:‭9‬-‭10‬ ‭NIV‬‬

“A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. They gathered in such large numbers that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them. Some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them. Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, “Why does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” Immediately and Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things? Which is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’? But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”” ‭‭Mark‬ ‭2‬:‭1‬-‭12‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Observations from Sunday's Teaching

After reading the verses, what are you thinking about or wondering?

What do you notice about the 4 friends who carried their friend to Jesus?

Tell about a time someone behaved like one of these 4 friends in your life.

Applications from Sunday's Teaching

Douglas reminded us that we are each a person who is part of a people. What does this mean?

What can you do to connect with others?

How can you make a difference with your life? Who are you carrying?

What is God asking you to do for your tribe?

Do you need to rethink a belief or position that has become an obstacle or is paralyzing?

Living Out the Big Two

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind. This is the first and greatest commandment, And the 2nd is like it: love your neighbor as yourself.” -Jesus (Matthew 22:34-39)

What is one way you lived out love God and/or others this week?
What is one way you stepped back from loving God and/or others this week?

Prayer

Lord, Let us be a safe place for everyone. We want to bring people to Your love. Let us tear open roofs, and tear down bias, hatred and obstacles so we can get people to You. Lord, help us to love others like You have loved us. -Amen
