Responsive Reading

Pastor:

Who believes what we’ve heard and seen?
Who would have thought God’s saving power would look like this?

Congregation:

The servant grew up before God—a scrawny seedling, a scrubby plant in a parched field.
There was nothing attractive about him, nothing to cause us to take a second look.

Pastor:

He was looked down on and passed over, a man who suffered, who knew pain firsthand. One look at him and people turned away. We looked down on him, thought he was scum.

Congregation:

But the fact is, it was our pains he carried— our disfigurements, all the things wrong with us. We thought he brought it on himself, that God was punishing him for his own failures.

Pastor:

But it was our sins that did that to him, that ripped and tore and crushed him—our sins! He took the punishment, and that made us whole. Through his bruises we get healed.

Congregation:

We’re all like sheep who’ve wandered off and gotten lost. We’ve all done our own thing, gone our own way. And God has piled all our sins, everything we’ve done wrong, on him, on him.

Pastor:

He was beaten, he was tortured, but he didn’t say a word. Like a lamb taken to be slaughtered and like a sheep being sheared, he took it all in silence.

Congregation:

Justice miscarried, and he was led off—
and did anyone really know what was happening? He died without a thought for his own welfare, beaten bloody for the sins of my people.

Pastor:

They buried him with the wicked, threw him in a grave with a rich man, Even though he’d never hurt a soul or said one word that wasn’t true.

Congregation:

Still, it’s what God had in mind all along,
to crush him with pain. The plan was that he give himself as an offering for sin so that he’d see life come from it—life, life, and more life.

Pastor:

And God’s plan will deeply prosper through him. Out of that terrible travail of soul, he’ll see that it’s worth it and be glad he did it. Through what he experienced, my righteous one, my servant, will make many “righteous ones,” as he himself carries the burden of their sins.

Congregation:

Therefore I’ll reward him extravagantly—
the best of everything, the highest honors—
Because he looked death in the face and didn’t flinch, because he embraced the company of the lowest. He took on his own shoulders the sin of the many, he took up the cause of all the wayward ones.

The Wonderful Cross

When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of Glory died
My richest gain I count but loss
And pour contempt on all my pride

See from his head, his hands, his feet
Sorrow and love flow mingled down
Did ever such love and sorrow meet
Or thorns compose so rich a crown

Oh the wonderful cross,

Oh the wonderful cross
Bids me come and die

and find that I may truly live
Oh the wonderful cross,

Oh the wonderful cross
All who gather here by grace draw near

and bless Your name

Were the whole realm of nature mine
That were an offering far too small
Love so amazing so divine
Demands my soul, my life, my all

Oh the wonderful cross,

Oh the wonderful cross
Bids me come and die

and find that I may truly live
Oh the wonderful cross,

Oh the wonderful cross
All who gather here by grace draw near

and bless Your name

Prayer For Those Who Lost Loved Ones

Graves Into Gardens

I searched the world,

But it couldn't fill me
Man's empty praise
And treasures that fade are never enough
Then You came along

And put me back together
And every desire is now satisfied,

Here in Your love

Oh, there's nothing better than You
There's nothing better than You
Lord, there's nothing,

Nothing is better than You

I'm not afraid

To show You my weakness
My failures and flaws
Lord, You've seem them all

And You still call me friend
'Cause the God of the mountain,

Is the God of the valley
There's not a place

Your mercy and grace won't find me again

Oh, there's nothing better than You
There's nothing better than You
Lord, there's nothing,

Nothing is better than You

You turn mourning to dancing,

You give beauty for ashes
You turn shame into glory,

You're the only one who can
You turn graves into gardens,

You turn bones into armies
You turn seas into highways,

You're the only one who can

Oh, there's nothing better than You
There's nothing better than You
Lord, there's nothing,

Nothing is better than You
Oh, there's nothing better than You
There's nothing better than You
Lord, there's nothing,

Nothing is better than You

You turn mourning to dancing,

You give beauty for ashes
You turn shame into glory,

You're the only one who can
You turn graves into gardens,

You turn bones into armies
You turn seas into highways,

You're the only one who can
You're the only one who can
You're the only one who can

Apostle's Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
He descended to hell.
On the third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended to heaven
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.
From there He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting. Amen.

Firm Foundation (He Won't)

Christ is my firm foundation
The rock on which I stand
When everything around me is shaken
I’ve never been more glad
That I put my faith in Jesus
‘Cause He’s never let me down
He’s faithful through generations
So why would He fail now
He won’t

He wont

I’ve still got joy in chaos
I’ve got peace that makes no sense
I won’t be going under
I’m not held by my own strength
‘Cause I’ve built my life on Jesus
He’s never let me down
He’s faithful in every season
So why would He fail now
He won’t, He won’t
He won’t fail
He won’t fail

He won't

He won’t
He won’t fail
He won’t fail

Christ is my firm foundation
The rock on which I stand
When everything around me is shaken
I’ve never been more glad
That I put my faith in Jesus
‘Cause He’s never let me down
He’s faithful through generations
So why would He fail now
He won’t, He won’t
He won’t fail
He won’t fail

Christ is my firm foundation
The rock on which I stand
When everything around me is shaken
I’ve never been more glad
That I put my faith in Jesus
‘Cause He’s never let me down
He’s faithful through generations
So why would He fail now
He won’t, He won’t
He won’t fail
He won’t fail
He won’t

Communion

King of Kings

In the darkness, we were waiting,

Without hope, without light
Till from heaven, You came running,

There was mercy in Your eyes
To fulfill the law and prophets,

To a virgin came the word
From a throne of endless glory,

To a cradle in the dirt

Praise the Father, praise the son
Praise the Spirit, three in one
God of glory, Majesty
Praise forever to the King of Kings

To reveal the kingdom coming,

And to reconcile the lost
To redeem the whole creation,

You did not despise the cross
For even in your suffering,

You saw to the other side
Knowing this was our salvation,

Jesus for our sake you died

Praise the Father, praise the son
Praise the Spirit, three in one
God of glory, Majesty
Praise forever to the King of Kings

And the morning that You rose,

All of heaven held its breath
Till that stone was moved for good,

For the Lamb had conquered death
And the dead rose from their tombs,

And the angels stood in awe
For the souls of all who'd come,

To the Father are restored

And the church of Christ was born,

Then the Spirit lit the flame
Now this gospel truth of old,

Shall not kneel, shall not faint
By His blood and in His name,

In His freedom I am free
For the love of Jesus Christ,

Who has resurrected me

Praise the Father, praise the son
Praise the Spirit, three in one
God of glory, Majesty
Praise forever to the King of Kings

Praise the Father, praise the son
Praise the Spirit, three in one
God of glory, Majesty
Praise forever to the King of Kings
Praise forever to the King of Kings
