God is Loyal

September 26 - October 2

Day 1

Contributed by: Taylor Fletcher, Worship Leader

Opening Prayer

Lord your loyalty to us is not conditional or based on our worth; it is an expression of your character. You simply are a generous and loving God. Compel us to reimagine why and how we can show loyalty back to you and others.

Scripture

And surely I am with you always, to the very ends of the age. - Matthew 28:20

For God’s Word is something to sing about! He is true to his promises, his word can be trusted, and everything he does is reliable and right. The Lord loves seeing justice on the earth. Anywhere and everywhere you can find his faithful, unfailing love! Psalm 33:4-5

Reading

Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD deal with me, be it ever so severely, if anything but death separates you and me.” - Ruth (Ruth 1:16-17)

Reflection

God is unavoidably loyal. He is not only fully present but fully committed and what He wants is always right and best for us. Memorize a verse from this week's Daily and God will use it to remind you of these very things when you need it.

Blessing

May our loyal God help you to be loyal such that the kingdom grows and you and others are blessed.

Day 2

Contributed by: Marq Caughell, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

Lord your loyalty to us is not conditional or based on our worth; it is an expression of your character. You simply are a generous and loving God. Compel us to reimagine why and how we can show loyalty back to you and others.

Scripture

The Lord gave them rest on every side, just as he had sworn to their ancestors. Not one of their enemies withstood them; the Lord gave all their enemies into their hands. Not one of all the Lord’s good promises to Israel failed; everyone was fulfilled. - Joshua 21: 44-45

Reading

“But, in that final peace to which all our righteousness has reference, and for the sake of which it is maintained, as our nature shall enjoy a sound immortality and incorruption, and shall have no more vices, and as we shall experience no resistance either from ourselves or from others, it will not be necessary that reason should rule vices which no longer exist, but God shall rule the man, and the soul shall rule the body, with a sweetness and facility suitable to the felicity of a life which is done with bondage.” - from The City of God by St. Augustine

Reflection

Loyalty should be earned. It is no virtue to be loyal to something or someone who has not earned it. Loyalty to a brand, group or individual can be noble or it can be foolish. There is no honor in being loyal to a cheater or liar. And yet, God is always loyal. More than I am willing to be towards other people and more loyal to me than I am to Him.

Blessing

May our loyal God help you to be loyal such that the kingdom grows and you and others are blessed.

Day 3

Contributed by: Keith Killen, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

Lord your loyalty to us is not conditional or based on our worth; it is an expression of your character. You simply are a generous and loving God. Compel us to reimagine why and how we can show loyalty back to you and others.

Scripture

Know that Yahweh your God is God, the faithful God who keeps His gracious covenant loyalty for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commands. Deuteronomy 7:9

Reading

When it comes to Loyalty, God is the standard. -Asari Offiong (Sarytotz)

This lost world will never be reached and brought back to loyalty to God, until the children of God wake up to the fact that they have a mission in the world. If we are true Christians we should all be missionaries. -D. L. Moody

Reflection

When it comes to loyalty, God’s loyalty to us is never in questions for he is the standard for loyalty. The question is about our loyalty to God for He has a mission and purpose for all of us. With loyalty and obedience, God’s kingdom is built, He is glorified and we and others are blessed.

Blessing

May our loyal God help you to be loyal such that the kingdom grows and you and others are blessed.

Day 4

Contributed by: Jacque Poole, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

Lord your loyalty to us is not conditional or based on our worth; it is an expression of your character. You simply are a generous and loving God. Compel us to reimagine why and how we can show loyalty back to you and others.

Scripture

"The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, maintaining love for thousands and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin " Exodus 34:6,7

Reading

"Lord, grant that anger or other bitterness does not reign over us, but that your grace, genuine kindness, loyalty, and every kind of friendliness, generosity, and gentleness may reign in us. Amen"-Martin Luther

Reflection

Another way to describe loyalty is "abounding in steadfast love." Loyal is defined as 'giving or showing firm and constant support or allegiance to a person or institution.' I would like loyalty to be a descriptor for my life.

I have written the prayer of Martin Luther onto my daily calendar to remind me to be compassionate, gracious, slow to anger, faithful and loyal. Keep moving forward.

Blessing

May our loyal God help you to be loyal such that the kingdom grows and you and others are blessed.

Day 5

Contributed by: Melissa Schultz, Cypress Elder

Opening Prayer

Lord your loyalty to us is not conditional or based on our worth; it is an expression of your character. You simply are a generous and loving God. Compel us to reimagine why and how we can show loyalty back to you and others.

Scripture

When my soul was embittered, when I was pricked in heart, I was brutish and ignorant; I was like a beast toward you.  Nevertheless, I am continually with you; you hold my right hand.  You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will receive me to glory. - Psalm 73:21-24

Reading

“Love, no matter how you come at it, is a huge risk.  It makes it easier for me to remember that God will never reject me because I am not good enough and that any community that has His heart will embrace me as I am. Jesus invites us into a community where imperfect people can find acceptance, love, forgiveness, and a new beginning.” -Erwin Raphael McManus

Reflection

I sometimes struggle to wrap my head around the all-encompassing love and loyalty of God.  My relationship with Him is unlike every other relationship I have ever known.  There’s no fear of rejection, or expectations for my perfection to sustain this bond.  This relationship is rooted not in who I am, but in who He is.  This relationship is the greatest gift I have ever known.

Blessing

May our loyal God help you to be loyal such that the kingdom grows and you and others are blessed.

Day 6

Contributed by: Douglas Poole, Lead Pastor

Opening Prayer

Lord your loyalty to us is not conditional or based on our worth; it is an expression of your character. You simply are a generous and loving God. Compel us to reimagine why and how we can show loyalty back to you and others.

Scripture

The Lord Himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. -Deuteronomy 31:8

Reading

Loyalty: To be unswerving in allegiance such as a loyal spouse; loyal friend, or a loyal dog.            Merriam-Webster

Reflection

When I am with someone of unquestioned loyalty I feel like I just inhaled a deep breath of peace; gulped down a refreshing glass of hope; and stepped in a zone of safety where I can be authentically vulnerable. The scripture says the Lord will never, never ever, leave you nor forsake you. And as for what awaits you tomorrow…He has already gone before you into that space. So breathe dear child, breathe in His peace. Drink down hope to the last drop. And rest safely…for your God is a Loyal God.

Blessing

May our loyal God help you to be loyal such that the kingdom grows and you and others are blessed.

God is Just

October 3 - October 9

Day 1

Contributed by: Douglas Poole, Lead Pastor

Opening Prayer

Grant us, Lord God, a vision of your world as your love would have it: a world where the weak are protected, and none go hungry or poor; ... a world where peace is built with justice, and justice is guided by love. Give us the inspiration and courage to build it, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Scripture

He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. -Micah 6:8

Reading

Just: “behaving according to what is morally right and fair”.

ie: fair-minded; even-handed; impartial; unbiased; honest; righteous; incorruptible           Merriam-Webster

Reflection

What does a just God require of us? Well…that we reflect who He is in our life and relationships with others. And a just God requires that we act “justly”. We deal with others as God deals with us…justly. What a relief to know that God is “morally right and fair” with me! And what a challenge it can be for me to live this out when I often have one standard for myself and another standard for others.

Blessing

Thank you God for being a just God, but also a merciful God who provided the means for our justification. Now, help us to receive your justice and allow us to experience the joy and freedom that it brings.

Day 2

Contributed by: Jacque Poole, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

Grant us, Lord God, a vision of your world as your love would have it: a world where the weak are protected, and none go hungry or poor; ... a world where peace is built with justice, and justice is guided by love. Give us the inspiration and courage to build it, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Scripture

"The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, maintaining love for thousands and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin " Exodus 34:6,7

Reading

"The very justness of God illuminates his love, grace, and mercy in a way that nothing else could because not only is God just, but he is our justifier, meaning he alone has the power and ability to make us righteous before him."-Robert Hampshire

Reflection

God is just. It sounds simple. But the depth of that reality is quite daunting when I think about what I deserve as an imperfect, sinful human being. But the comfort comes in the additional truth that God is JUST and He is our JUSTIFIER. Knowing that God is compassionate, gracious, slow to anger, faithful, loyal, and just brings the true balance of who our God is...He is not just a single attribute, but all of them together because He loves us eternally.

Blessing

Thank you God for being a just God, but also a merciful God who provided the means for our justification. Now, help us to receive your justice and allow us to experience the joy and freedom that it brings.

Day 3

Contributed by: Keith Killen, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

Grant us, Lord God, a vision of your world as your love would have it: a world where the weak are protected, and none go hungry or poor; ... a world where peace is built with justice, and justice is guided by love. Give us the inspiration and courage to build it, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Scripture

I will bear the indignation of the Lord because I have sinned against Him, until He pleads my case and executes justice for me.  He will bring me out to the light, and I will see His righteousness. -Micah 7:9

Reading

There is nothing more destructive than secrets.  In fact, you can probably measure the depth of your walk with God by the absence of secrets in your life.  The more we hide in the closets, the less we find that perfect peace God promises.  In this verse, Micah tells us that God’s justice includes bringing us into the light.  God intends to expose who we are. Dr Skip Moen

Reflection

We all believe things to be true that are not. These lie based beliefs often rob us of our joy and the living in peace and calm with God and with others. It often takes suffering and pain to move us to the justice God has provided for us. But, the resulting joy and freedom are well worth the experience.

Blessing

Thank you God for being a just God, but also a merciful God who provided the means for our justification. Now, help us to receive your justice and allow us to experience the joy and freedom that it brings.

Day 4

Contributed by: Marq Caughell, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

Grant us, Lord God, a vision of your world as your love would have it: a world where the weak are protected, and none go hungry or poor; ... a world where peace is built with justice, and justice is guided by love. Give us the inspiration and courage to build it, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Scripture

I lavish unfailing love to a thousand generations. I forgive iniquity, rebellion, and sin.

But I do not excuse the guilty. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children and grandchildren;

the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth generations. - Exodus 34: 7

Reading

“For to the just, all the evils imposed on them by unjust rulers are not the punishment of crime, but the test of virtue.” - from The City of God by St. Augustine

Reflection

Ask the child of an addict (work, pride, vanity, alcohol, drugs, sex - name your vice) how true it is that the sins of the parents have profound, generational effects. No one else is responsible for my actions. With my own hand, I create the issues that will haunt my descendants for generations to come. Lord, please forgive me and help me make amends for the pain that I have caused.

Blessing

Thank you God for being a just God, but also a merciful God who provided the means for our justification. Now, help us to receive your justice and allow us to experience the joy and freedom that it brings.

Day 5

Contributed by: Melissa Schultz, Cypress Elder

Opening Prayer

Grant us, Lord God, a vision of your world as your love would have it: a world where the weak are protected, and none go hungry or poor; ... a world where peace is built with justice, and justice is guided by love. Give us the inspiration and courage to build it, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Scripture

All this is evidence that God’s judgment is right, and as a result you will be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are suffering.  God is just: He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well.  This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels. 2 Thessalonians 1: 5-7

Reading

“[God] has no malice in His purity, no maliciousness in His actions.  God does not “delight” in the death of the wicked—even though He decrees it.  His judgments upon evil are rooted in His righteousness, not in some distorted malice in His character.  Like an earthly judge weeps when he sends the guilty for punishment, God rejoices in the justness of it, but gets no glee from the pain of those justly punished.” R.C. Sproul

Reflection

In profession, I am a therapist.  I still remember the day in my training when my mentor explained to me why the therapeutic relationship is unlike any other.  This relationship is unbiased.  As therapists, we’re not bringing in our own history with the client causing us to give recommendations or next steps with hopes of a certain goal or outcome.  We don’t pretend to know what is in someone’s best interest or what their exact right next step should be….because we’ve not walked their walk and in ways we’re detached from it.  Yes, their friends and parents and spouses likely all want what is best for them, but based on their history and relationship, the advice they offer is filtered through some sort of lens.  They can’t “show up” without bringing some of that in to skew the perspective.  On the smallest scale, this illustration helps me wrap my head around the beauty and blessing of our relationship with God.  God is perfectly righteous and just.  He knows the larger vision and the role we play within that.  Only He is able to offer judgement because only He knows that which is truly just and unjust, without bias, without prejudice, without emotional ties.

Blessing

Thank you God for being a just God, but also a merciful God who provided the means for our justification. Now, help us to receive your justice and allow us to experience the joy and freedom that it brings.

Day 6

Contributed by: Taylor Fletcher, Worship Leader

Opening Prayer

Grant us, Lord God, a vision of your world as your love would have it: a world where the weak are protected, and none go hungry or poor; ... a world where peace is built with justice, and justice is guided by love. Give us the inspiration and courage to build it, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Scripture

The Rock, His work is perfect, for all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is he. -Deuteronomy 32:4

Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; steadfast love and faithfulness go before you. -Psalm 89:14

Reading

…it takes the quiet of a suburban home for the birth of the thesis that human nonviolence corresponds to God’s refusal to judge. In a scorched land, soaked in the blood of the innocent, it will invariably die. And as one watches it die, one will do well to reflect about many other pleasant captivities of the liberal mind. -Miroslav Volf, Exclusion and Embrace

Reflection

God’s justice is courageously making other peoples problems my problems. The reasonable response to God’s justice in our own lives is to seek justice for others. What are you doing with your resources to pursue God’s justice.

Blessing

Thank you God for being a just God, but also a merciful God who provided the means for our justification. Now, help us to receive your justice and allow us to experience the joy and freedom that it brings.

Bread of Life

October 10 - October 16

Day 1

Contributed by: Keith Killen, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

Oh Bread of Life, feed me till I want no more and then help me to bring others to this Bread of Life.

Scripture

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.  John 10:10 NASB

Reading

The forty-year midbar* (wilderness) journey was intended as a difficult odyssey of self-understanding, a reconnaissance mission into the human heart.  The manna is essential wilderness food, unknown, uncanny; but precisely in  its unknowability it will open a new kind of knowledge: ‘that man does not live on bread alone but on what issues from God’s mouth.’  The sentence communicates the mystery of the manna: it stirs up the question—What is it that can sustain human life? Avivah Gottlieb Zornberg,  Bewilderments: Reflections on the Book of Numbers, p. xvii.

*Hebrew for wilderness

Reflection

I’ve come to realize that I want certainty in my understanding of the scriptures and how to live life. But, God wants me to trust without having certainty. He wants me to have my “daily bread” and trust His words and revelation even without certainty. He wants me to live in my midbar (wilderness) and trust Him. Jesus’ power came from His trust in the Father

and daily communication with Him for direction. All of His major decision followed a time of prayer. If your waiting for certainty, you may be waiting for quite some time. Instead, trust and move through your wilderness as God leads and directs. Get your daily bread from the Bread of Life.

Blessing

May the Lord help you to realize how important it is to come to the Bread of Life each day for our “daily bread.” May it bring you into the abundant life, the life of peace and calm that He desire for you even while we struggle through life.

Day 2

Contributed by: Taylor Fletcher, Worship Leader

Opening Prayer

Oh Bread of Life, feed me till I want no more and then help me to bring others to this Bread of Life.

Scripture

While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take and eat; this is my body.” - Matthew 26:26

Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. -John 6:53

Reading

Christian discipleship is more a matter of hungering and thirsting than of knowing and believing” -James Smith “You are What You Love”

Bread of Heaven, Bread of Heaven feed me till I want no more, feed me till I want no more” - William Willams “Guide Me Oh Thou Great Jehovah”

Reflection

We’ve replaced hungering for Jesus with just knowing about Him. We numb the hunger pains for the Bread of Life with the bread of the world but it's a poor substitute. Are you hungry for the Bread of Life? How are you developing a taste for Jesus?

Blessing

May the Lord help you to realize how important it is to come to the Bread of Life each day for our “daily bread.” May it bring you into the abundant life, the life of peace and calm that He desire for you even while we struggle through life.

Day 3

Contributed by: Melissa Schultz, Cypress Elder

Opening Prayer

Oh Bread of Life, feed me till I want no more and then help me to bring others to this Bread of Life.

Scripture

I am the bread of life.  Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. -John 6:35

Reading

“You know, the grain-to-bread process is a demanding one.  Bread is the end result of planting, harvesting, and heating.  Jesus endured an identical process.  He was born into this world.  And then He was cut down, bruised, and beaten on the threshing floor of Calvary.  He passed through the fire of God’s wrath, for our sake.  Jesus “suffered because of others’ sins…He went through it all—was put to death and then made alive—to bring us to God” (1 Peter 3:18).  Bread of Life?  Jesus lived up to the title.  But you know, an unopened loaf does a person no good.  Have you received the bread?  Have you received God’s forgiveness?” Max Lucado

Reflection

I love the reminder here that in order to receive, we must first open.  We must open our hearts and minds to receive, but I would also add that we must “dig in”.  Not only do I want to smell the aroma of fresh baked bread, I want to indulge in it, savor it, and allow it to nourish my body.  The same is true in my relationship with God.  I don't simply know of Him, His word sprinkled throughout my day.  I want to be in relationship with him, digging into His word, learning more about His ways and moving my life in that direction.  I want to know Him in a way that it changes me.

Blessing

May the Lord help you to realize how important it is to come to the Bread of Life each day for our “daily bread.” May it bring you into the abundant life, the life of peace and calm that He desire for you even while we struggle through life.

Day 4

Contributed by: Douglas Poole, Lead Pastor

Opening Prayer

Oh Bread of Life, feed me till I want no more and then help me to bring others to this Bread of Life.

Scripture

I am the bread of life.  Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. -John 6:35

Reading

People are not hungry just for bread, they are hungry for love. -Mother Teresa

Reflection

Bread. Often bread is used in the scriptures to denote sustenance. It doesn’t take long to see that for better or worse what and how much we ingest and digest impacts the quality of our lives. What is true of the body is also true of the soul. The Psalmist speaks of “the bread of tears” (Ps. 80:5) and Solomon of “the bread of wickedness” (Proverbs 4:17) that people have fed their souls and thus shaped their realities. Jesus offers us a new reality…life that is defined by grace, purpose and love. A life that is ours as we ingest (learn His teachings) and digest (live His words out). Taste and see that the Lord is good.

Blessing

May the Lord help you to realize how important it is to come to the Bread of Life each day for our “daily bread.” May it bring you into the abundant life, the life of peace and calm that He desire for you even while we struggle through life.

Day 5

Contributed by: Jacque Poole, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

Oh Bread of Life, feed me till I want no more and then help me to bring others to this Bread of Life.

Scripture

John 6:35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.

Reading

This is a phenomenal statement! First, by equating Himself with bread, Jesus is saying he is essential for life. Second, the life Jesus is referring to is not only physical life, but also eternal life. He is contrasting what He brings as their Messiah with the bread He miraculously created the day before. That was physical bread that perishes. He is spiritual bread that brings eternal life.

Third, and very important, Jesus is making another claim to deity. This statement is the first of the “I AM” statements in John’s Gospel. The phrase “I AM” is the covenant name of God (Yahweh, or YHWH), revealed to Moses at the burning bush (Exodus 3:14). The phrase speaks of self-sufficient existence, which is an attribute only God possesses. It is also a phrase the Jews who were listening would have automatically understood as a claim to deity. -Got Questions Ministry

Reflection

Jesus said, “I am the bread of life…” Five words that have more meaning and power than is evident at first listen or reading. Jesus is essential. He is with us in both this physical reality and the spiritual reality. Jesus is GOD...the Great I AM. All that we need now and forevermore. “I Am the Bread of Life.”

As you go through your day let this marinate in all you do. “I am the bread of life.” As you eat, drink, think and plan. As you interact with others, struggle to accomplish a task or wrestle with a relational challenge. Remember: Jesus. I Am the Bread of Life.

Blessing

May the Lord help you to realize how important it is to come to the Bread of Life each day for our “daily bread.” May it bring you into the abundant life, the life of peace and calm that He desire for you even while we struggle through life.

Day 6

Contributed by: Marq Caughell, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

Oh Bread of Life, feed me till I want no more and then help me to bring others to this Bread of Life.

Scripture

Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. - John 6:35

Reading

“But the reward of the saints is far different, who even here endured reproaches for that city of God which is hateful to the lovers of this world. That city is eternal. There none are born, for none die. There is true and full felicity,–not a goddess, but a gift of God. Thence we receive the pledge of faith whilst on our pilgrimage we sigh for its beauty. There rises not the sun on the good and the evil, but the Sun of Righteousness protects the good alone.”  - from The City of God by St. Augustine

Reflection

I am not perfectly satiated or optimally hydrated - physically or spiritually. I have made it this far only because of the fortification of salvation. He provides the oases I need along my journey, and when I reach His city, I know every step will have been worth it.

Blessing

May the Lord help you to realize how important it is to come to the Bread of Life each day for our “daily bread.” May it bring you into the abundant life, the life of peace and calm that He desire for you even while we struggle through life.

Light of the World

October 17 - October 23

Day 1

Contributed by: Jacque Poole, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

Heavenly Father, Help me to “walk in the Light as He is the Light.” May Your Light purify me such that Your light flows in and through me to the rest of my world.

Scripture

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” - John 8:12

Reading

Light is the source of all life on our planet. The importance of light can be comprehended as plants synthesize nutrients from light using chlorophyll, and filter the air we breathe. Animals and humans depend on plants for survival. Therefore, everything depends on the light in some way. The human body needs to be exposed to natural sunlight and its rhythm to function properly. -IMPOFF website

Reflection

There is literally a requirement for light in our world. Our world is sustained by the sunlight for food, warmth and the health of our plants, animals and humankind. Jesus’s statement: “I am the LIght of the World” carries the reminder that our world does not exist without Him. Just like our world cannot exist without the sunlight, our world cannot exist without the Son’s light.

Take some time to notice the light that exists in your physical world. Recognize the power of life in the warmth of the sun and its light. Then notice how the light is a reflection of the love, life and light from Jesus.

Seek the light and live in it. You will find life sustenance from the Light of the World, Jesus.

Blessing

Light of the World, may we choose to stay in Your light and reflect it to those around us rather than to contribute to the chaos. May we honor and glorify You as we walk in this Light together.

Day 2

Contributed by: Taylor Fletcher, Worship Leader

Opening Prayer

Heavenly Father, Help me to “walk in the Light as He is the Light.” May Your Light purify me such that Your light flows in and through me to the rest of my world.

Scripture

Then Jesus said, “I am light to the world, and those who embrace me will experience life-giving light, and they will never walk in darkness.” -John 8:12

In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. John 1:4

Reading

“Let your little light shine, shine, shine. There might be someone down in the valley trying to get home.” - traditional

Reflection

We all can recognize light and darkness. It’s fundamental. Which one do you “walk” in? The word “light” shows up at least 30 times in the gospel of John. I’ve given you just two here. Find another and spend some time meditating and walking in the Light.

Blessing

Light of the World, may we choose to stay in Your light and reflect it to those around us rather than to contribute to the chaos. May we honor and glorify You as we walk in this Light together.

Day 3

Contributed by: Keith Killen, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

Heavenly Father, Help me to “walk in the Light as He is the Light.” May Your Light purify me such that Your light flows in and through me to the rest of my world.

Scripture

…but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. 1 John 1:7 NASB

Reading

God will return to us when we shall be willing to let Him in—into our banks and factories, into our Congress and clubs, into our courts and investigating committees, into our homes and theaters. For God is everywhere and nowhere, the Father of all men or no man, concerned with everything or nothing. Only in His presence shall we learn that the glory of man is not in his will to power, but in his power of compassion. Man reflects either the image of His presence or that of a beast. Dr Skip Moen

Reflection

I have the power to reflect the image of His presence by walking in the Light of the Word or I can choose to have my own way and be a beast. One way leads to inner peace and calm in spite of the chaos around me, the other contributes to the chaos. Thank God for a tribe who chooses to move toward the Light. I choose to move along with you.

Blessing

Light of the World, may we choose to stay in Your light and reflect it to those around us rather than to contribute to the chaos. May we honor and glorify You as we walk in this Light together.

Day 4

Opening Prayer

Heavenly Father, Help me to “walk in the Light as He is the Light.” May Your Light purify me such that Your light flows in and through me to the rest of my world.

Scripture

Jesus once again addressed them: “I am the world’s Light. No one who follows me stumbles around in the darkness. I provide plenty of light to live in.” -John 8:12 MSG

I will find the light for it shows me the way, yet I will endure the darkness for it shows me the stars. -Og Mandino

Reflection

My Jacque and I were on the return leg of a sailing adventure. The sun set and darkness prevailed. Between our boat and our home port stood a bridge with only a narrow passageway which our mast could fit under. Finding it seemed rather important. In the distance we spotted the small red light glowing in the indigo night that stood over the passageway. My eyes locked in on it’s glimmer and we set course. Find the light…move to it…find your way home.

Blessing

Light of the World, may we choose to stay in Your light and reflect it to those around us rather than to contribute to the chaos. May we honor and glorify You as we walk in this Light together.

Day 5

Contributed by: Marq Caughell, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

Heavenly Father, Help me to “walk in the Light as He is the Light.” May Your Light purify me such that Your light flows in and through me to the rest of my world.

Scripture

Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” - John 8:12

Reading

“Is it not rather proof of a feeble mind, to be unable to bear either the pains of bodily servitude or the foolish opinion of the vulgar? And is not that to be pronounced the greater mind, which rather faces than flees the ills of life, and which, in comparison of the light and purity of conscience, holds in small esteem the judgment of men, and specially of the vulgar, which is frequently involved in a mist of error?” - from The City of God by St. Augustine

Reflection

Will you look toward, or away from, the light? It is there, shining brightly - announcing itself as a beacon of hope and guidance to all who will accept it.

Blessing

Light of the World, may we choose to stay in Your light and reflect it to those around us rather than to contribute to the chaos. May we honor and glorify You as we walk in this Light together.

Day 6

Opening Prayer

Heavenly Father, Help me to “walk in the Light as He is the Light.” May Your Light purify me such that Your light flows in and through me to the rest of my world.

Scripture

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world.  Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12

Reading

“This is what I know: God can make something beautiful out of anything, out of darkness and trash and broken bones. He can shine light into even the blackest night, and he leaves glimpses of hope all around us. An oyster, a sliver of moon, one new bud on a black branch, a perfect tender shoot of asparagus, fighting up through the dirt for the spring sun. New life and new beauty are all around us, waiting to be discovered, waiting to be seen.” Shauna Niequist

“Lighthouses don’t go running all over an island looking for boats to save; they just stand there shining.” Anne Lamott

Reflection

When I think about the times that I’ve been closest to the Lord, I realize that it’s never during a season of harvest, or when I’m feeling an overwhelming abundance.  Instead, it’s in those moments that have felt so hard and so dark and so full of desperation that I wasn’t quite sure how I might make it to the next moment.  In that fear, in that uncertainty, feeling like I couldn’t breathe in midst of that darkness…Jesus was there.  He didn’t send a floodlight or a flashing florescent billboard, but instead gave me the smallest glimpse of light to move me toward the next right thing.  Like the smallest flicker of a votive, he lit the way only enough for me to see the next step, and to remind me that I wasn’t in it alone.

Blessing

Light of the World, may we choose to stay in Your light and reflect it to those around us rather than to contribute to the chaos. May we honor and glorify You as we walk in this Light together.

Gate of the Sheep

October 24 - October 30

Day 1

Contributed by: Melissa Schultz, Cypress Elder

Opening Prayer

Jesus, as the door of Your sheep, open the doors for me that lead to Your will and purposes and to a life of peace and calm for me. Close those doors that lead me into temptations that contribute to life’s chaos for me and others.

Scripture

Therefore Jesus said again, “very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep…I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.  They will come in and go out, and find pasture.” John 10:7, 9

Reading

“When Jesus refers to himself as the door or gate of the sheep, he’s using a familiar metaphor for his listeners.  It would’ve been commonplace to see shepherds and sheep wandering around.  Jesus draws his metaphor from the imagery of a sheep pen, which was an enclosure usually made of stone walls.  At night, the shepherds would bring the sheep in there to allow them to rest securely.  The sheep would enter one at a time, while the shepherd would stop each sheep with his rod and check each one out for wounds.  He would let them through one by one and drop his rod over the next one and when he had examined him, would let the sheep in.  Shepherds would even share a sheep pen and put all their animals in this enclosure.  All of the village sheep would be in one fold which was the place of protection.  Historians have found evidence that when these shepherds put the sheep in the pen at night, the shepherds would lie across the front of the pen and would act as a guard.  They were effectively a door or gate for the sheep pen.  This was not only to prevent predators getting in but to prevent sheep getting out. The shepherds would lay across and fall asleep there or stay watch.  The sheep would go in or out only with the shepherd’s care.” Robert Sang

Reflection

I love this analogy because of the clarity it offers.  The only way into the pen is through the gate.  You can’t take a shortcut, or scale a wall, or dig for a hidden entrance.  The safety and security are only received in one way.  Just as our hope, our future, and our salvation are only received through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Blessing

Would the Lord be your Shepard, lead you to a life without lack brimming with safety, rest, strength, guidance and blessings. Where goodness and unfailing love will pursue you all the days of your life and you will live in the house of the Lord forever. -Psalm 23

Opening Prayer

Jesus, as the door of Your sheep, open the doors for me that lead to Your will and purposes and to a life of peace and calm for me. Close those doors that lead me into temptations that contribute to life’s chaos for me and others.

Scripture

Jesus told this simple story, but they had no idea what he was talking about. So he tried again. “I’ll be explicit, then. I am the Gate for the sheep. All those others are up to no good—sheep rustlers, every one of them. But the sheep didn’t listen to them. I am the Gate. Anyone who goes through me will be cared for—will freely go in and out, and find pasture. A thief is only there to steal and kill and destroy. I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of. John 10:6-9 MSG

And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. -John 17:3

Reading

“The bible was written for us but not to us” - John H. Walton

Reflection

“I’ll be explicit then”. Here is our great struggle with the bible. What was once plain or even explicitly easy to understand is now totally foreign to us. The bible was written for us but not to us. It isn’t a guide book, instruction manual or a love letter. It is a unified story that leads us to Jesus. God will bless your attempts to understand who he wrote it to so you can comprehend Himself and what He wants for you.

Blessing

Would the Lord be your Shepard, lead you to a life without lack brimming with safety, rest, strength, guidance and blessings. Where goodness and unfailing love will pursue you all the days of your life and you will live in the house of the Lord forever. -Psalm 23

Scripture

Therefore Jesus said again, “Very truly I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them.  am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. John 10:7-9

Reading

When Jesus refers to himself as the door or gate of the sheep, he’s using a familiar metaphor for his listeners. It would’ve been commonplace to see shepherds and sheep wandering around.

The sheep would enter one at a time, while the shepherd would stop each sheep with his rod and check each one out for wounds.

Opening Prayer

Jesus, as the door of Your sheep, open the doors for me that lead to Your will and purposes and to a life of peace and calm for me. Close those doors that lead me into temptations that contribute to life’s chaos for me and others.

Scripture

Yes, I am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved. They will come and go freely and will find good pastures. - John 10:9 NLT

Reading

“They will not refuse the discipline of this temporal life, in which they are schooled for life eternal; nor will they lament their experience of it, for the good things of the earth they use as pilgrims who are not detained by them, and its ills either prove or improve them.” - from The City of God by St. Augustine

Reflection

I know that that gate I will need to pass through is narrow. Wide enough for my whole self, but nothing more. I need to put down all these self-made trinkets that are preventing me from walking through.

Scripture

“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter by the door into the fold of the sheep, but climbs up some other way, he is a thief and a robber.” John 10:1 NASB

Reading

Isn’t that what Yeshua says in John 14:15: “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments”? What if the “door” is about commandments, not saviors? The rest of the parable is about hearing the voice of the shepherd, but doesn’t that imply that the sheep who hear his voice do what he tells them to do. Isn’t the “good shepherd” the one who gives proper  instruction? Dr Skip Moen

Reflection

In Hebrew thinking, faith is not what I possess, but what I demonstrate in my daily walk. That is what James 2:20 is suggesting when he states, “…faith without works is useless.” (NASB). If we are following Jesus, He will give instructions like He did with His disciples. We can choose to follow them by passing through the doors that Jesus opens or we can choose to climb in places by other means and be “a thief and a robber.” Choosing other means than the doors Jesus opens may actually lead to wealth, power, and/or fame, but it never leads to the joy, peace and calm of abundant living.

Scripture

I am the Gateway. To enter through me is to experience life, freedom, and satisfaction. - John 10:9 TPT

Reading

I stand by the door.

I neither go too far in, nor stay too far out,

The door is the most important door in the world-

It is the door through which men walk when they find God.

So many are still outside and they, as much as I,

Crave to know where the door is.

And all that so many ever find

Is only a wall where a door ought to be.

They creep along the wall like blind men,

With outstretched, groping hands,

Feeling for a door, knowing there must be a door,

Yet never find it…

So I stand by the door.

       -Samuel Moor Shoemaker

Reflection

Walls are designed to keep out. Doors, when unlocked and open, let you in. One of the things my Jacque and I tried to get into the souls of our children is that the door home is always, at any time, no matter what…open to them. Just come home to unconditional love and acceptance. No cleaning up, measuring up or paying up…just walk through the door. The door to God has a name…it is Jesus. Welcome home…the door is open.

Blessing

Would the Lord be your Shepard, lead you to a life without lack brimming with safety, rest, strength, guidance and blessings. Where goodness and unfailing love will pursue you all the days of your life and you will live in the house of the Lord forever. -Psalm 23

Resurrection and Life

October 31 - November 6

Day 1

Contributed by: Keith Killen, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

Jesus, thank you for the hope we have through Your death and resurrection. May we share this good news with others.

Scripture

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus according to the commandment of God our Savior, and of Christ Jesus, who is our hope, 1 Timothy 1:1  NASB

Reading

It seems to me that Paul sees Yeshua (Jesus) as 1) the first fruit of acceptability before God for all who will follow, and 2) the guarantee that there is something after death, something real as evidenced by the risen Messiah. What’s new is that this man came back from the grave to proclaim the victory of God over death itself.  What’s new is that there really is a reason to push on; that this life is not the end.  What’s new is the flesh and blood evidence of vindication, justice and resurrection. Because he lived this life in obedience, YHWH (GOD) raised him to be the final authority in this realm, and as his followers we have hope that we will participate in his eternal kingdom. Dr Skip Moen

Reflection

Yeshua (Jesus) is the ultimate example of what it is to live in harmony with God. Because of His model and teachings, we know what is required of us. My time on this earth should be spent in getting the truth and healing I need to live a similar life. I don’t think there is enough time for me to get all the truth and healing I truly need, but that does not mean I should give up. It is a journey, not an event.

Blessing

May Jesus help you to receive the truth and healing you need to continue on the journey and give you the hope of life eternal.

Day 2

Contributed by: Taylor Fletcher, Worship Leader

Opening Prayer

Jesus, thank you for the hope we have through Your death and resurrection. May we share this good news with others.

Scripture

“Martha,” Jesus said, “You don’t have to wait until then. I am the Resurrection, and I am Life Eternal. Anyone who clings to me in faith, even though he dies, will live forever. - John 11:25 TPT

From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” - Matthew 4:17

Reading

“The good news, that whoever you are wherever you are, you can be involved in what Christ is doing in this world. The gospel is about each moment. If you want to go to heaven now is the time.” - Dallas Willard

Reflection

We need the Resurrection and the Life right now. We need to be practicing eternity. Then, when we are confronted with the pain of mortality and the beauty of God we’ll be ready. Jesus offered it to Martha, Lazarus and now to you. Which kingdom will you live in today?

Blessing

May Jesus help you to receive the truth and healing you need to continue on the journey and give you the hope of life eternal.

Day 3

Contributed by: Marq Caughell, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

Jesus, thank you for the hope we have through Your death and resurrection. May we share this good news with others.

Scripture

Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. - John 11:25

Reading

“And thus it is written, “The just lives by faith,” for we do not as yet see our good, and must therefore live by faith; neither have we in ourselves power to live rightly, but can do so only if He who has given us faith to believe in His help do help us when we believe and pray.” - from The City of God by St. Augustine

Reflection

I am a child of God. I was created in His image and he asks me to call Him my Father. That must mean there is real goodness inside me, inside all of us. Even if we can’t see it in ourselves or others at the moment. Please help me to remember to act like the child of a King and to treat others as equal siblings.

Blessing

May Jesus help you to receive the truth and healing you need to continue on the journey and give you the hope of life eternal.

Day 4

Contributed by: Jacque Poole, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

Jesus, thank you for the hope we have through Your death and resurrection. May we share this good news with others.

Scripture

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”-John 11:25-26

Reading

Outside Bethany, Lazarus’s sister Martha went out to meet Jesus. “If you had been here,” she said, “my brother would not have died.” Such was her faith in Jesus’ power to heal. Jesus replied by assuring Martha that her brother would rise again. Martha responded again in faith: “I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.” At this point, Jesus makes His fifth “I Am” statement in John’s gospel, “I am the resurrection and the life,” and He follows it with a call to faith: “He who believes in me will live, even though he dies, and whoever lives and believes in me will never die” (John 11:21-24). Jesus’ statement that He is the resurrection and the life provides a godly perspective on several spiritual matters. Martha believed that the resurrection is an event; Jesus showed her (and us) that the resurrection is a Person. Martha’s knowledge of eternal life was an abstract idea; Jesus proved that knowledge of eternal life is a personal relationship. Martha thought victory over death was a future expectation; Jesus corrects her, showing that victory is a present reality.-Got Questions Ministries

Reflection

As a 13 year old who had just lost her 42 year old dad to a heart attack, I did not have the faith of Martha. I gave up my faith and decided God didn’t exist, so I could avoid any thoughts of hell. Jesus’s statement, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die…” fills me with hope. Hope for today, hope for tomorrow. Hope for my dad and hope for so many others. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought death to many of us. The losses leave gaps in our hearts and in our souls. For me, I am thankful that Jesus is the resurrection and the life...and that it is a present reality. Today remind yourself that you have hope. Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life…”

Blessing

May Jesus help you to receive the truth and healing you need to continue on the journey and give you the hope of life eternal.

Opening Prayer

Jesus, thank you for the hope we have through Your death and resurrection. May we share this good news with others.

Scripture

“You don’t have to wait for the End. I am, right now, Resurrection and Life. The one who believes in me, even though he or she dies, will live. And everyone who lives believing in me does not ultimately die at all. Do you believe this?” -John 11:25 MSG

Reading

Everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die to get there. -Joe Lewis

Reflection

150 funerals. That is how many funerals I have officiated in my 40 years of being a Pastor. One of the things I have said in these moments of grief over words that were yet to be said, memories left unmade, and a chair that will sit unoccupied is this: “It doesn’t end here”. “It ends in the presence of the Heavenly Father where we will see our Jesus and reunite with those who put their faith in Him. And we will dance and dazzle through the ages in that bright eternal city where death can never, never come”. We Christians call this our hope, our blessed hope.

Blessing

May Jesus help you to receive the truth and healing you need to continue on the journey and give you the hope of life eternal.

Day 6

Opening Prayer

Jesus, thank you for the hope we have through Your death and resurrection. May we share this good news with others.

Scripture

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life.  The one who believes in me will live, even though they die;” John 11:25

Reading

“The greatest enemy of hunger for God is not poison, but apple pie.  It is not the banquet of the wicked that dulls our appetite for heaven, but the endless nibbling at the table of the world….The greatest adversary of love to God is not in his enemies but his gifts.  And the most deadly appetites are not for the poison of evil, but for the simple pleasures of earth.  For when these replace an appetite for God himself, the idolatry is scarcely recognizable, and almost incurable. ” John Piper

Reflection

Isn’t it true that the very gifts from God, simple pleasures from the earth, are often what distract us from our relationship with Him?  When we have enough or live in abundance, we must take extra caution to ensure our hunger for God isn’t being satisfied by the trivial.  How do we live joyfully, and in appreciation of, our many blessings while remaining focused on living for Him?

Blessing

May Jesus help you to receive the truth and healing you need to continue on the journey and give you the hope of life eternal.
