Day 1

Contributed by: Taylor Fletcher, Worship Leader

Opening Prayer

God I need your help to earn money honestly, to spend money effectively, and to be generous without being foolish.

Scripture

Believers in humble circumstances ought to take pride in their high position. But the rich should take pride in their humiliation—since they will pass away like a wild flower. James 1:9-10

Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. -Ecclesiastes 5:10

Reading

…be happy with our without money. Money only magnifies who you really are. - Robert Kiyosaki

'Cause I don't care too much for money. For money can't buy me love - The Beatles

Reflection

Those who don’t have much should focus on how rich they are in Jesus. And, those who have done well financially should focus on how poor they are without Jesus. The only treasure that has real value is found in Jesus, and both those who have means and those who don’t can get it wrong and veer off course.

Blessing

May God bless you with enough money to meet your needs, to bless others, and to fulfill His purposes for your life.

Day 2

Contributed by: Jacque Poole, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

God I need your help to earn money honestly, to spend money effectively, and to be generous without being foolish.

Scripture

Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the first fruits of all your produce; then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine. - Proverbs 3:9-10

Reading

As base a thing as money often is, yet it can be transmuted into everlasting treasure. It can be converted into food for the hungry and clothing for the poor. Any temporal possession can be turned into everlasting wealth. Whatever is given to Christ is immediately touched with immortality. - A. W. Tozer

Reflection

I am encouraged by this statement from A. W. Tozer. The money that I earn can make an eternal difference if I choose to use it wisely. At Cypress we are committed to helping children step out of poverty here in Pinellas County, in Nakura, Kenya and in St. Louis du Nord, Haiti. I want my money to make a difference...and it does. At Cypress, downtown, through Malik Day. And it does in Nakuru at Springs of Hope Kenya where Molly uses my money to lead the ministry to impact 100’s of lives and has been the hands and feet of Jesus on the ground in Nakuru. And it does in St. Louis du Nord, Haiti where Pastor Jean uses my money to ensure children get an education and are safe at home in their community from child traffickers. Money can be transmuted into everlasting treasure. I am grateful and filled with joy at the thought that God is using my temporal possession and turning it into eternal wealth. Let’s keep making a difference with the money God has given us. It feels good!

Blessing

May God bless you with enough money to meet your needs, to bless others, and to fulfill His purposes for your life.

Day 3

Contributed by: Douglas Poole, Lead Pastor

Opening Prayer

God I need your help to earn money honestly, to spend money effectively, and to be generous without being foolish.

Scripture

No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.   -Matthew 6:24

Reading

One of the dangers of having a lot of money is that you may be quite satisfied with the kinds of happiness money can give, and so fail to realize your need for God. If everything seems to come simply by signing checks, you may forget that you are at every moment totally dependent on God. - from Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis

Reflection

The author of these words, C.S. Lewis once admitted that he was a panic-y person about money and that poverty frightened more than anything except spiders. Nevertheless he was determined that money would not become his master, so every bit of the royalties from his many publications went into a fund that was dispensed to those in need. Money makes a great servant but a rather bad master. Peace comes from a deep trust in God…not deep pockets.

Blessing

May God bless you with enough money to meet your needs, to bless others, and to fulfill His purposes for your life.

Day 4

Contributed by: Keith Killen, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

God I need your help to earn money honestly, to spend money effectively, and to be generous without being foolish.

Scripture

A faithful man will abound with blessings, but whoever hastens to be rich will not go unpunished. Proverbs 28:20

Reading

But what was the actual experience of the society?  Riches brought power and power was addictive.  Ezekiel expresses it like this: “Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy” (Ezekiel 16:49).  Yes, of course, the citizens of Sodom were sexually immoral, but Ezekiel’s point is that immorality is but a symptom of something worse—indifference.  They were rich but they showed no compassion for the poor.  This is the nightmare of human history. It is still with us today.  The rich take care of themselves.  The poor are left to deal with life as best they can.  Torah seeks social justice.  Man seeks social isolation. Dr Skip Moen

Reflection

John D. Rockefeller rightly quoted “How much money does it take to make a man happy? Just one more dollar.” Because the pursuit of money does not bring happiness; it only brings the never satisfied pursuit for more. And our scripture above reminds us this pursuit will not go unpunished. Real happiness comes from using the money we have for the right purposes. When is the last time you felt the joy of meeting someone else’s need with no expectation of it being returned. The recent response by the Cypress Tribe’s to the fire at our Kenya orphanage is a perfect example of how a community can come together and make an investment in the kingdom. There is joy in knowing you have made a difference in this world. And I believe you have brought happiness into the lives of those who will be blessed by your generosity. What a joy to share in this kind of community.

Blessing

May God bless you with enough money to meet your needs, to bless others, and to fulfill His purposes for your life.

Day 5

Contributed by: Marq Caughell, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

God I need your help to earn money honestly, to spend money effectively, and to be generous without being foolish.

Scripture

Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back. - Luke 6:38

Reading

"I believed in the beautiful myth about having a good time so long as it does not hurt anybody else. You cannot live for your own pleasure and your own convenience without inevitably hurting and injuring the feelings and interests of practically everybody you meet." - The Seven Storey Mountain by Thomas Merton

Reflection

The more I focus on achieving all my wants and desires, the less they satisfy me. I need more. There can never be enough. Ever. It's a game that can't be won. Thank you, Lord, for rewriting the rules we got so wrong.

Blessing

May God bless you with enough money to meet your needs, to bless others, and to fulfill His purposes for your life.

Day 6

Contributed by: Taylor Fletcher, Worship Leader

Opening Prayer

God I need your help to earn money honestly, to spend money effectively, and to be generous without being foolish.

Scripture

Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income.  This too is meaningless. Ecclesiastes 5:10

Reading

“No matter how little money we have, no matter what rung we occupy on anybody’s corporate ladder of success, in the end what everybody discovers is that what matters is other people. -John Ortberg

“Money cannot buy peace of mind.  It cannot heal ruptured relationships or build meaning into a life that has none.”  - Richard M DeVos

Reflection

Having some amount of money is a necessity within today’s society.  It enables us to provide for the basic needs of food, shelter, and clothing; those things that Maslow would refer to as basic needs .  Yet, when we’re exploring what’s really important…what really matters…the things that our Creator identifies as the most important factors that should drive our decisions, passions, and ideals; He calls us to focus on love, people, and relationships.  Money may be a necessity, but accumulating it isn’t all that important.  When we look back at our lives, on what brings us joy and satisfaction, meaning and a soul-filling existence, what I believe we will all find at the core is our relationships.  What is one thing might you do today with the goal of focusing on, improving, or growing in your relationships with others?

Blessing

May God bless you with enough money to meet your needs, to bless others, and to fulfill His purposes for your life.

Wealth

June 6 - June 12

Click here to check out this week's song for inspiration:

Crowns by Elevation Worship

Day 1

Contributed by: Melissa Schultz

Opening Prayer

Thank You God for all your blessings and for the wealth I already possess; not just in money but in relationships, resources and talents as well. Help me to use my wealth in a way that honors You, brings blessings to others, and fulfills Your plans and purposes.

Scripture

Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers it little by little will increase it. -Proverbs 13:11

Reading

“I used to be afraid I wouldn’t make enough money.  Now I’m afraid I won’t make enough difference”. -Bob Goff

Reflection

To properly dig into this scripture found in Proverbs, it seems important to first define the key terms.  Merriam-Webster defines hastily as “with excessive speed or urgency; hurriedly”, wealth as having multiple definitions, one being “abundant supply”, and dwindle as “diminish gradually in size, amount, or strength”.  Using that, I interpret this scripture to mean that in gaining an abundant supply of something, in a hurried or excessively quick way, we will likely lose it.  But in growth over time, gradually, progressively; the supply will increase.  And doesn’t that play out in our daily lives?  When things are quickly and easily acquired, without much effort, planning, or seeking of wisdom, they’re often as quick to disappear.  But those areas in which we plan and focus, essentially where we put our time, energies, and attention; we find accumulative growth.  We grow in our wisdom when we make wisdom a priority and seek our Lord in the decisions that we make.  We grow in relationships through careful tending of those relationships that we hold dear.  We accumulate patience and kindness and grace when we intentionally practice those things in our actions and interactions.  Thus, having “enough” of something is often the result of being thoughtful, intentional, and prayerful in moving toward that “supply” we desire.

Blessing

May you realize the wealth you already possess and begin to share it with others in a way that blesses them and fulfills God’s purposes.

Day 2

Contributed by: Keith Killen, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

Thank You God for all your blessings and for the wealth I already possess; not just in money but in relationships, resources and talents as well. Help me to use my wealth in a way that honors You, brings blessings to others, and fulfills Your plans and purposes.

Scripture

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. -Matthew 6:19-21

Great wealth is in the house of the righteous,

But trouble is in the income of the wicked. -Proverbs 15:6

Reading

Jesus said something else about the relationship between wealth and real treasure.  He drew another lesson from Proverbs 15:6.  Jesus commented that great financial wealth is a significant hindrance to God’s treasures (remember the camel and the needle?).  God’s treasures are found in a life of humility; a life that has left self-sufficiency behind.  But great wealth easily seduces us into self-reliance.  Wealth can be a substitute for dependence on God.  It is a trap for pride.  Very few can handle wealth and remain servants of the King.  Fortunately, for those of us whose tendencies lean toward self-reliance, God is gracious enough not to put great wealth in our path.  His treasures are far better. -Dr Skip Moen

Reflection

As the song so aptly put it, “Lord, its hard to be humble.” As we accumulate wealth, there is a strong delusion that we can manage on our own and control our future. Both are lies that rob us of our peace and calm. The last time I cried out to God and said I was out of control, God so vividly revealed to me that I was never in control. With the truth that God is really in control, there comes a peace in letting go of the illusion and impossible burden of trying to take control. Real wealth comes when we realize wealth is not the size of our bank account but in the blessing God has already poured out on our lives as we follow His leading.

Blessing

May you realize the wealth you already possess and begin to share it with others in a way that blesses them and fulfills God’s purposes.

Day 3

Contributed by: Jacque Poole, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

Thank You God for all your blessings and for the wealth I already possess; not just in money but in relationships, resources and talents as well. Help me to use my wealth in a way that honors You, brings blessings to others, and fulfills Your plans and purposes.

Scripture

Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.” -Luke 6:38

Reading

If a man is proud of his wealth, he should not be praised until it is known how he employs it. –Socrates

Reflection

Wealth is defined as “an abundance of valuable possessions or money, being rich, or having plentiful supplies of a particular resource.” Most of my thoughts about wealth focus on money. However, wealth exists in a myriad of ways and resources. For example, one may have a wealth of knowledge, wealth of love, wealth of natural resources (water, wood, minerals, etc.) or a wealth of friends, among many other resources. Socrates cautions us to consider how wealth is employed or used before we applaud one who is wealthy. Luke records Jesus’ words of caution regarding wealth…”Give and it will be given to you..For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.” Be thoughtful about how you use your wealth. Will you be praised? What measure are you using to give?

Blessing

May you realize the wealth you already possess and begin to share it with others in a way that blesses them and fulfills God’s purposes.

Day 4

Contributed by: Marq Caughell, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

Thank You God for all your blessings and for the wealth I already possess; not just in money but in relationships, resources and talents as well. Help me to use my wealth in a way that honors You, brings blessings to others, and fulfills Your plans and purposes.

Scripture

And if you are untrustworthy about worldly wealth, who will trust you with the true riches of heaven? - Luke 16:11

Reading

“All men who live only according to their five senses, and seek nothing beyond the gratification of their natural appetites for pleasure and reputation and power, cut themselves off from that charity which is the principal of all spiritual vitality and happiness because it alone saves us from the barren wilderness of our abominable selfishness.” - The Seven Storey Mountain by Thomas Merton

Reflection

All types of wealth require some sort of sacrifice. I can sacrifice relationships, time, health, my beliefs and anything else that gets in my way to achieve worldly wealth. Or, I can sacrifice my desires for power, pleasure and reputation and begin to experience the first tastes of heaven’s treasures (Love, Peace and Hope) here and now.

Blessing

May you realize the wealth you already possess and begin to share it with others in a way that blesses them and fulfills God’s purposes.

Day 5

Contributed by: Taylor Fletcher, Worship Leader

Opening Prayer

Thank You God for all your blessings and for the wealth I already possess; not just in money but in relationships, resources and talents as well. Help me to use my wealth in a way that honors You, brings blessings to others, and fulfills Your plans and purposes.

Scripture

“Moreover, I will give you (Solomon) what you have not asked for, both wealth and honor, so that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings. And if you walk in obedience to me and keep my decrees and commands… I will give you a long life.” - 1 Kings 3:13-14

Reading

"If those who 'gain all they can,' and 'save all they can,' will likewise 'give all they can;' then, the more they gain, the more they will grow in grace, and the more treasure they will lay up in heaven.” - John Wesley, “The Use of Money”

Reflection

Solomon was the wealthiest man to ever live. He received over a billion dollars in gold each year (1King 10) and had an estimated net worth of over 2 trillion! And even though he was the wisest man to ever live (1King 3:12) he was not the most generous. Solomon, his family and nation suffered for it. How are you living John Wesley’s principle with the wealth you have?

Blessing

May you realize the wealth you already possess and begin to share it with others in a way that blesses them and fulfills God’s purposes.

Day 6

Contributed by: Douglas Poole, Lead Pastor

Opening Prayer

Thank You God for all your blessings and for the wealth I already possess; not just in money but in relationships, resources and talents as well. Help me to use my wealth in a way that honors You, brings blessings to others, and fulfills Your plans and purposes.

Scripture

Your wealth and silver are corroded. The very wealth you were counting on will eat away your flesh like fire. This corroded treasure you have hoarded will testify against you on the day of judgement.  -James 5:3

Reading

What will you do with your power, wealth, might and armies? What kind of world will you create with it? Will you use it to manipulate and overpower others to build your empire even bigger, or will you use it to help the widow, the orphan and the refugee among you? -Rob Bell

Reflection

There is nothing wrong with wealth. Right or wrong is a matter of both how you acquire it and what you do with it. Wealth is a noun. A noun that only has meaning when used in conjunction with verbs…like give. If you are not careful you can end up with a garage and life full of nouns.

Blessing

May you realize the wealth you already possess and begin to share it with others in a way that blesses them and fulfills God’s purposes.

Poverty

June 13 - June 19

Day 1

Contributed by: Taylor Fletcher, Worship Leader

Opening Prayer

Lord, when I am poor in spirit, possessions, and/or emotions, send to me those who can pick me up. When I am in abundance, send to me those who I may lift up and bless.

Scripture

Jesus unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.’ -Luke 4:17-19

Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done. -Proverbs 19:17

Reading

We have necessities, conveniences, and luxuries in life. Determine what those are and concerning convince and luxury spend one to one on yourself and the needy, the poor and or the Lords work.  -John Newton

Yours are the hands through which he blesses all the world. Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, yours are the eyes, you are his body. Christ has no body now on earth but yours.” - Teresa of Avila

Reflection

Jesus begins His ministry by declaring the Year of Jubilee. A year in the Jewish calendar when all debts would be canceled, slaves would go free, and all possession would be returned to their rightful owners. Where ever Jesus went and where ever His people go the reality of this year of Jubilee should follow. How are you helping?

Blessing

Lord, help us to see those who are living in poverty. Whether they are hungry, naked, and homeless or unwanted, unloved or uncared for. Reveal to us how we may help them and in doing so help you.

Day 2

Contributed by: Marq Caughell, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

Lord, when I am poor in spirit, possessions, and/or emotions, send to me those who can pick me up. When I am in abundance, send to me those who I may lift up and bless.

Scripture

Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed. Yes, speak up for the poor and helpless, and see that they get justice. - Proverbs 31:8-9

Reading

“It was through the prayers of someone who loved God that I was one day, to be delivered out of that hell where I was already confined without knowing it.” - The Seven Story Mountain by Thomas Merton

“We are not to simply bandage the wounds of victims beneath the wheels of injustice, we are to drive a spoke into the wheel itself.” - Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Reflection

There will always be people who have more than me, and I need to be better about accepting that. There will always be people who have a lot less than me, and I need to be better about NOT being ok with that. Am I just going to watch the Wheel of Injustice turn?

Blessing

Lord, help us to see those who are living in poverty. Whether they are hungry, naked, and homeless or unwanted, unloved or uncared for. Reveal to us how we may help them and in doing so help you.

Day 3

Contributed by: Melissa Schultz, Cypress Elder

Opening Prayer

Lord, when I am poor in spirit, possessions, and/or emotions, send to me those who can pick me up. When I am in abundance, send to me those who I may lift up and bless.

Scripture

If there is a poor man with you, one of your brothers, in any of your towns in your land which the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart, nor close your hand from your poor brother; but you shall freely open your hand to him, and shall generously lend him sufficient for his need in whatever he lacks. -Deuteronomy 15:7-8

Reading

“We think sometimes that poverty is only being hungry, naked, and homeless.  The poverty of being unwanted, unloved, and uncared for is the greatest poverty.” -Mother Theresa

Reflection

Poverty isn’t defeated by wealth but by love. When we love…we care. When we truly care…we share. Perhaps if we spent less time judging those who have less, and less time justifying what we have acquired and a little more time loving there would be less poverty in our souls and in the world.

Blessing

Lord, help us to see those who are living in poverty. Whether they are hungry, naked, and homeless or unwanted, unloved or uncared for. Reveal to us how we may help them and in doing so help you.

Day 4

Contributed by: Douglas Poole, Lead Pastor

Opening Prayer

Lord, when I am poor in spirit, possessions, and/or emotions, send to me those who can pick me up. When I am in abundance, send to me those who I may lift up and bless.

Scripture

I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me…whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.  -Matthew 25:35, 36, 40

Reading

The poverty in the West is a different kind of poverty – it is not only a poverty of loneliness it is a poverty of spirituality. There is a hunger for love, as there is a hunger for God. -Mother Teresa

God does not create poverty, we do…because we do not share. -Mother Teresa

Blessing

Day 5

Contributed by: Jacque Poole, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

Lord, when I am poor in spirit, possessions, and/or emotions, send to me those who can pick me up. When I am in abundance, send to me those who I may lift up and bless.

Scripture

Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy. -Proverbs 31:8,9

Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity than a rich man who is crooked in his ways. -Proverbs 28:6 ESV

Reading

Poverty is not an accident. Like slavery and apartheid it is manmade and can be removed by the actions of human beings.

Overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity. It is an act of justice. -Nelson Mandela

Reflection

Poverty was something I didn’t understand when I was younger. I thought poverty was the result of bad decisions. But I have witnessed poverty that was not the “fault” of those standing in front of me. I have witnessed poverty that could not be overcome by sheer willpower and determination. We must step in to bring justice for those in poverty. We must open our mouth. We must defend the rights of the poor and needy. We must see them.

Blessing

Lord, help us to see those who are living in poverty. Whether they are hungry, naked, and homeless or unwanted, unloved or uncared for. Reveal to us how we may help them and in doing so help you.

Day 6

Contributed by: Keith Killen, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

Lord, when I am poor in spirit, possessions, and/or emotions, send to me those who can pick me up. When I am in abundance, send to me those who I may lift up and bless.

Scripture

He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God. -Proverbs 14:31

Reading

Poverty is not made by God, it is created by you and me when we don’t share what we have.

We think sometimes that poverty is only being hungry, naked and homeless. The poverty of being unwanted, unloved, and uncared for is the greatest poverty. Never worry about numbers, help one person at a time. And always start with the person next to you. -Mother Theresa

Reflection

Having worked intermittently in Manila, Philippines over the last 15 years, I’ve seen and met with people living in poverty. And with the Covid pandemic, poverty in the world is increasing at an incredible rate. But, you do not have to go half way around the world to find it. There are people next to you who are feeling unwanted, unloved, and uncared for. Let’s reach out to them no matter who they are or from where they came.

Blessing

Lord, help us to see those who are living in poverty. Whether they are hungry, naked, and homeless or unwanted, unloved or uncared for. Reveal to us how we may help them and in doing so help you.

Generosity

June 20 - June 26

Day 1

Contributed by: Marq Caughell, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

Lord God, help me to be kind and generous to others as you have been so to me. May my generosity to others be a sacrifice of praise to you.

Scripture

Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. -2 Corinthians 9:6

Reading

“God in His mercy was permitting me to fly as far as I could from His love but at the same time preparing to confront me, at the end of it all, and in the bottom of the abyss, when I thought I had gone furthest away from Him.” - The Seven Storey Mountain by Thomas Merton

Reflection

Why did I wonder why it felt like what I wanted most was being withheld from me when I was only giving the barest of minimums? I threw a few token seeds onto the weed-choked ground and expected a bumper crop.

Blessing

May God bless you as you bring glory to Him by doing generous acts for those God puts in your path each day

Day 2

Contributed by: Keith Killen, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

Lord God, help me to be kind and generous to others as you have been so to me. May my generosity to others be a sacrifice of praise to you.

Scripture

“Beware of practicing your righteousness before men to be noticed by them, otherwise you have no reward with your Father in heaven.”  Matthew 6:1

Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. -James 1:27

Reading

In Judaism, giving to the poor is not viewed as a generous, magnanimous act; it is simply an act of justice and righteousness, the performance of a duty, giving the poor their due.  With this in mind, we see that Yeshua is telling citizens of the Kingdom that they are to take care of the needs of others without publicity and human recognition.  They are to do what is necessary for others in exactly the opposite way that the kingdoms of the world behave.  They are to model the secret hand of the Master, displaying God’s character undercover. - Dr Skip Moen

Reflection

Everything I have actually belongs to God and is on loan to me as a means of glorifying God, meeting my needs, and blessing others. Since I cannot actually do generous acts to and for God, He allows me to please Him by doing these acts for others. It should be acts of love to glorify God and not yourself. Orphans and widows whom James references in the scripture above, represents the most vulnerable in society. As Jesus said, “Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it for one of the least of these brothers or sisters of Mine, you did it for Me.”

Blessing

May God bless you as you bring glory to Him by doing generous acts for those God puts in your path each day

Day 3

Contributed by: Douglas Poole, Lead Pastor

Opening Prayer

Lord God, help me to be kind and generous to others as you have been so to me. May my generosity to others be a sacrifice of praise to you.

Scripture

Freely you have received; freely give. -Matthew 10:8

Reading

You can choose the way of compassion, the way of forgiveness and the way of generosity. Or you can choose other paths and those have very real consequences in the world. This is absolutely crucial. -Rob Bell

Reflection

We are all contributing to the creation of the future. Will it be more compassionate, caring and hopeful? Or steeped deeper in callousness, division and despair? You choose. Freely and generously we have received from our Lord…so freely and generously give of love, forgiveness, and possessions. By the way, that breath you just took…was a gift.

Blessing

May God bless you as you bring glory to Him by doing generous acts for those God puts in your path each day

Day 4

Contributed by: Melissa Schultz, Cypress Elder

Opening Prayer

Lord God, help me to be kind and generous to others as you have been so to me. May my generosity to others be a sacrifice of praise to you.

Scripture

Give and it will be given to you. . A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap.  For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Luke 6:38

Reading

“There is always more on its way—more opportunity, more ideas, more love.  Think abundance—always think abundance.  Belief in abundance is the source of all generosity and peace.  Know that there is enough.  Know that you are enough.  Know that you have enough.” -Glennon Doyle

Reflection

I’ve always been fascinated with the concepts of scarcity and abundance, specifically with how our view of it impacts our entire experience.  When we’re operating from a place of scarcity, so much of what follows is based in fear; fear of not having enough, fear of not being enough.  But when we can change our mindset to operate from a place of abundance, everything changes.  In knowing that we have enough and we are enough, we’re able to bring hopefulness, positivity, and excitement to every situation.  When we realize that through our relationship with God we will always have enough, we’re released from the chains of fear, and can focus on generously sharing those gifts we’ve been blessed with.

Blessing

May God bless you as you bring glory to Him by doing generous acts for those God puts in your path each day

Day 5

Opening Prayer

Lord God, help me to be kind and generous to others as you have been so to me. May my generosity to others be a sacrifice of praise to you.

Scripture

One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want. Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered. -Proverbs 11:24-25

Reading

I do not believe one can settle how much we ought to give. I am afraid the only safe rule is to give more than we can spare. In other words, if our expenditure on comforts, luxuries, amusements, etc, is up to the standard common among those with the same income as our own, we are probably giving away too little. If our charities do not at all pinch or hamper us, I should say they are too small. There ought to be things we should like to do and cannot do because our charitable expenditure excludes them. –C.S. Lewis

Reflection

Synonyms of generosity include: big heartedness, bountifulness, liberality, openhandedness, openheartedness, and unselfishness. Generosity is willingly and lavishly sharing your resources with those in need. Give freely. Bless others and you will be enriched. Give generously. You will be filled with joy and peace. The blessing will be yours as well. Let’s go forward in generosity.

Blessing

May God bless you as you bring glory to Him by doing generous acts for those God puts in your path each day

Day 6

Contributed by: Taylor Fletcher, Worship Leader

Opening Prayer

Lord God, help me to be kind and generous to others as you have been so to me. May my generosity to others be a sacrifice of praise to you.

Scripture

Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant. - Philippians 2:6-7

Reading

“A lack of generosity refuses to acknowledge that your assets are not really yours, but God’s. -Timothy Keller, Generous Justice: How God's Grace Makes Us Just

Reflection

It is the nature of God to give up power and privilege. Jesus took His glory and he gave it away. If we really want to be generous and witness the change generosity can make in others and us we have to give like Jesus, sacrificially to the point where power is exchanged.

Blessing

May God bless you as you bring glory to Him by doing generous acts for those God puts in your path each day

Gentleness

June 27 - July 3

Day 1

Contributed by: Jacque Poole, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

Lord, teach me to respond to others with gentleness in all circumstances. Give me a gentle spirit that recognizes my emotions and allows the truth to be revealed. May Your gentle Spirit be reflected in my response to others.

Scripture

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourself with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. -Colossians 3:12

Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. -Philippians 4:9

Reading

“I choose gentleness… Nothing is won by force. I choose to be gentle. If I raise my voice may it only be in praise. If I clinch my fist, may it only be in prayer. If I make a demand, may be only of myself.” —Max Lucado

Reflection

Stop and reflect. When have you been gentle this day?  This week? Recently? Jot down your responses. Consider the situations in which you could have been gentle. Jot down your responses. What are 1 or 2 things you can do to demonstrate gentleness?

For example: Perhaps you want to be conscious of your feelings, or use the space between the incident and your response to make a thoughtful, gentle choice, or allow yourself to care, or take your focus deeper. Jot your next steps on a stickie note and post it where you will see it throughout the day. May your gentleness be evident to all.

Blessing

May the Lord infill you with His gentle spirit such that you can show the world gentleness, even when least expected, and in a way that begins transforming relationships for the better.

Day 2

Opening Prayer

Lord, teach me to respond to others with gentleness in all circumstances. Give me a gentle spirit that recognizes my emotions and allows the truth to be revealed. May Your gentle Spirit be reflected in my response to others.

Scripture

Is God’s comfort too little for you? Is his gentle word not enough? - Job 15:11

Reading

“I had come very far, to find myself in this blind-alley: but the very anguish and helplessness of my position was something to which I rapidly succumbed. And it was my defeat that was to be the occasion of my rescue.” - from The Seven Storey Mountain by Thomas Merton

Reflection

When I was finally able to admit that I couldn’t do it alone, I was then able to see that I did not have to. God is happy to lead and guides me gently as I follow.

Blessing

May the Lord infill you with His gentle spirit such that you can show the world gentleness, even when least expected, and in a way that begins transforming relationships for the better.

Day 3

Contributed by: Taylor Fletcher, Worship Leader

Opening Prayer

Lord, teach me to respond to others with gentleness in all circumstances. Give me a gentle spirit that recognizes my emotions and allows the truth to be revealed. May Your gentle Spirit be reflected in my response to others.

Scripture

Gentle words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones. -Proverbs 16:24

“Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces. - Matthew 7:6

Reading

“The problem with pearls for pigs is not that the pigs are not worthy. It is not worthiness that is in question here at all, but helpfulness. Pigs cannot digest pearls. Likewise for a dog with a Bible or a crucifix. The dog cannot eat it. The reason these animals will finally ‘turn and rend you,’ when you one day step up to them with another load of Bibles or pearls, is that you at least are edible. - Dallas Willard

Reflection

Dogs and pigs don’t want lofty things they want whats left on your plate. People are not that different. If you want a person to have the greater things in life you have to be willing to give them the “honeycomb” they desire. Gentleness will open doors for you to give people the Bread of Life that satisfies where table scraps fail.

Blessing

May the Lord infill you with His gentle spirit such that you can show the world gentleness, even when least expected, and in a way that begins transforming relationships for the better.

Day 4

Opening Prayer

Lord, teach me to respond to others with gentleness in all circumstances. Give me a gentle spirit that recognizes my emotions and allows the truth to be revealed. May Your gentle Spirit be reflected in my response to others.

Scripture

A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. -Proverbs 15:1

Reading

“I choose gentleness…Nothing is won by force.  I choose to be gentle.  If I raise my voice, may it be only in praise.  If I clench my fist, may it be only in prayer.  If I demand, may it only be of myself.” Max Lucado

Reflection

Having two little ones I’m often reminded that how we say something is just as important as what we say.  I’ve been guilty of saying something harmless in a way that could harm relationships; and I’ve uttered really difficult words with love, grace, and gentleness.  While I feel I don’t know many things for certain, I do know that I want to lead a life full of beautiful, messy, joy and tear filled relationships.  I know I won’t always get it right, but I want conversations with messages (both positive and difficult), covered in love and gentleness.  I want to build others up through gentleness, and be a gentle landing spot when difficult things are spoken in love.

Blessing

May the Lord infill you with His gentle spirit such that you can show the world gentleness, even when least expected, and in a way that begins transforming relationships for the better.

Day 5

Contributed by: Douglas Poole, Lead Pastor

Opening Prayer

Lord, teach me to respond to others with gentleness in all circumstances. Give me a gentle spirit that recognizes my emotions and allows the truth to be revealed. May Your gentle Spirit be reflected in my response to others.

Scripture

Speak evil of no one, avoid quarreling, be gentle, show perfect courtesy toward all people. -Titus 3:2

Reading

Love and kindness within our souls is revealed in the twinkle in our eyes, the glow of our smiles and the gentleness of our words. -Mother Teresa

Reflection

The adjective kindness is defined as: “having or showing a mild, kind, or tender temperament or character; moderate in action and not harsh or severe”. Our God is oh so powerful…yet oh so kind. And people will know that He is a gentle God when we His people are gentle with all people.

Blessing

May the Lord infill you with His gentle spirit such that you can show the world gentleness, even when least expected, and in a way that begins transforming relationships for the better.

Day 6

Contributed by: Keith Killen, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

Lord, teach me to respond to others with gentleness in all circumstances. Give me a gentle spirit that recognizes my emotions and allows the truth to be revealed. May Your gentle Spirit be reflected in my response to others.

Scripture

But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceful, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. James 3:17

Reading

“Be healing with your words, be tender with your words, be gentle with your words and watch your words bring gentle, tender healing in the hearts of others.” ― Heather Wolf, Kipnuk Visits Sea Isle

Reflection

My wife had often scolded me about leaving specks on the bathroom mirror after brushing my teeth. I didn’t do it on purpose but those harsh words did nothing to change my behavior. Then I found a note on the bathroom mirror one morning explaining that if I could go one week with no specks, there would be a surprise I would not soon forget. My wife passed away 11 years ago but I still clean the mirror when I see specks. Amazing what a kind, gentle gesture can do instead of a harsh word.

Blessing

May the Lord infill you with His gentle spirit such that you can show the world gentleness, even when least expected, and in a way that begins transforming relationships for the better.
