Gentleness

June 27 - July 3

Day 1

Contributed by: Jacque Poole, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

Lord, teach me to respond to others with gentleness in all circumstances. Give me a gentle spirit that recognizes my emotions and allows the truth to be revealed. May Your gentle Spirit be reflected in my response to others.

Scripture

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourself with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. -Colossians 3:12

Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. -Philippians 4:9

Reading

“I choose gentleness… Nothing is won by force. I choose to be gentle. If I raise my voice may it only be in praise. If I clinch my fist, may it only be in prayer. If I make a demand, may be only of myself.” —Max Lucado

Reflection

Stop and reflect. When have you been gentle this day?  This week? Recently? Jot down your responses. Consider the situations in which you could have been gentle. Jot down your responses. What are 1 or 2 things you can do to demonstrate gentleness?

For example: Perhaps you want to be conscious of your feelings, or use the space between the incident and your response to make a thoughtful, gentle choice, or allow yourself to care, or take your focus deeper. Jot your next steps on a stickie note and post it where you will see it throughout the day. May your gentleness be evident to all.

Blessing

May the Lord infill you with His gentle spirit such that you can show the world gentleness, even when least expected, and in a way that begins transforming relationships for the better.

Day 2

Contributed by: Marq Caughell, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

Lord, teach me to respond to others with gentleness in all circumstances. Give me a gentle spirit that recognizes my emotions and allows the truth to be revealed. May Your gentle Spirit be reflected in my response to others.

Scripture

Is God’s comfort too little for you? Is his gentle word not enough? - Job 15:11

Reading

“I had come very far, to find myself in this blind-alley: but the very anguish and helplessness of my position was something to which I rapidly succumbed. And it was my defeat that was to be the occasion of my rescue.” - from The Seven Storey Mountain by Thomas Merton

Reflection

When I was finally able to admit that I couldn’t do it alone, I was then able to see that I did not have to. God is happy to lead and guides me gently as I follow.

Blessing

May the Lord infill you with His gentle spirit such that you can show the world gentleness, even when least expected, and in a way that begins transforming relationships for the better.

Day 3

Contributed by: Taylor Fletcher, Worship Leader

Opening Prayer

Lord, teach me to respond to others with gentleness in all circumstances. Give me a gentle spirit that recognizes my emotions and allows the truth to be revealed. May Your gentle Spirit be reflected in my response to others.

Scripture

Gentle words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones. -Proverbs 16:24

“Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces. - Matthew 7:6

Reading

“The problem with pearls for pigs is not that the pigs are not worthy. It is not worthiness that is in question here at all, but helpfulness. Pigs cannot digest pearls. Likewise for a dog with a Bible or a crucifix. The dog cannot eat it. The reason these animals will finally ‘turn and rend you,’ when you one day step up to them with another load of Bibles or pearls, is that you at least are edible. - Dallas Willard

Reflection

Dogs and pigs don’t want lofty things they want whats left on your plate. People are not that different. If you want a person to have the greater things in life you have to be willing to give them the “honeycomb” they desire. Gentleness will open doors for you to give people the Bread of Life that satisfies where table scraps fail.

Blessing

May the Lord infill you with His gentle spirit such that you can show the world gentleness, even when least expected, and in a way that begins transforming relationships for the better.

Day 4

Contributed by: Melissa Schultz, Cypress Elder

Opening Prayer

Lord, teach me to respond to others with gentleness in all circumstances. Give me a gentle spirit that recognizes my emotions and allows the truth to be revealed. May Your gentle Spirit be reflected in my response to others.

Scripture

A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. -Proverbs 15:1

Reading

“I choose gentleness…Nothing is won by force.  I choose to be gentle.  If I raise my voice, may it be only in praise.  If I clench my fist, may it be only in prayer.  If I demand, may it only be of myself.” Max Lucado

Reflection

Having two little ones I’m often reminded that how we say something is just as important as what we say.  I’ve been guilty of saying something harmless in a way that could harm relationships; and I’ve uttered really difficult words with love, grace, and gentleness.  While I feel I don’t know many things for certain, I do know that I want to lead a life full of beautiful, messy, joy and tear filled relationships.  I know I won’t always get it right, but I want conversations with messages (both positive and difficult), covered in love and gentleness.  I want to build others up through gentleness, and be a gentle landing spot when difficult things are spoken in love.

Blessing

May the Lord infill you with His gentle spirit such that you can show the world gentleness, even when least expected, and in a way that begins transforming relationships for the better.

Day 5

Contributed by: Douglas Poole, Lead Pastor

Opening Prayer

Lord, teach me to respond to others with gentleness in all circumstances. Give me a gentle spirit that recognizes my emotions and allows the truth to be revealed. May Your gentle Spirit be reflected in my response to others.

Scripture

Speak evil of no one, avoid quarreling, be gentle, show perfect courtesy toward all people. -Titus 3:2

Reading

Love and kindness within our souls is revealed in the twinkle in our eyes, the glow of our smiles and the gentleness of our words. -Mother Teresa

Reflection

The adjective kindness is defined as: “having or showing a mild, kind, or tender temperament or character; moderate in action and not harsh or severe”. Our God is oh so powerful…yet oh so kind. And people will know that He is a gentle God when we His people are gentle with all people.

Blessing

May the Lord infill you with His gentle spirit such that you can show the world gentleness, even when least expected, and in a way that begins transforming relationships for the better.

Day 6

Contributed by: Keith Killen, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

Lord, teach me to respond to others with gentleness in all circumstances. Give me a gentle spirit that recognizes my emotions and allows the truth to be revealed. May Your gentle Spirit be reflected in my response to others.

Scripture

But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceful, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. James 3:17

Reading

“Be healing with your words, be tender with your words, be gentle with your words and watch your words bring gentle, tender healing in the hearts of others.” ― Heather Wolf, Kipnuk Visits Sea Isle

Reflection

My wife had often scolded me about leaving specks on the bathroom mirror after brushing my teeth. I didn’t do it on purpose but those harsh words did nothing to change my behavior. Then I found a note on the bathroom mirror one morning explaining that if I could go one week with no specks, there would be a surprise I would not soon forget. My wife passed away 11 years ago but I still clean the mirror when I see specks. Amazing what a kind, gentle gesture can do instead of a harsh word.

Blessing

May the Lord infill you with His gentle spirit such that you can show the world gentleness, even when least expected, and in a way that begins transforming relationships for the better.

Faithfulness

July 4 - July 10

Day 1

Contributed by: Douglas Poole, Lead Pastor

Opening Prayer

Lord, may you find me being faithful. And when my faith falters, will you send your Spirit to lift me up.

Scripture

Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man. -Proverbs 3:3,4

Reading

A little thing is a little thing, but faithfulness in little things is a great thing. -Hudson Taylor

Reflection

A life resolutely convinced of God’s unwavering faithfulness and committed to uncompromising faithfulness in return…is a life spilling over with courage, hope, confidence and peace.

Blessing

May your Heavenly Father help you to believe and thereby to be faithful in all you do, during good times and bad.

Day 2

Contributed by: Keith Killen, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

Lord, may you find me being faithful. And when my faith falters, will you send your Spirit to lift me up.

Scripture

But Jesus said to him, “‘If You can?’ All things are possible for the one who believes.” Immediately the boy’s father cried out and said, “I do believe; help my unbelief!” -Mark 9:23-24

Reading

God has not called me to be successful. He called me to be faithful. Mother Teresa

Reflection

Our pursuits in life are often aimed at being successful rather than in being faithful. It is the difficult times that reminds us the focus needs to be on being faithful. And even then, it requires God’s help. As the father of the demonized son proclaimed to Jesus, I do believe; help my unbelief. May that be our prayer and not just in difficult times, but at all times.

Blessing

May your Heavenly Father help you to believe and thereby to be faithful in all you do, during good times and bad.

Day 3

Contributed by: Jacque Poole, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

Lord, may you find me being faithful. And when my faith falters, will you send your Spirit to lift me up.

Scripture

Now faith is a confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. -Hebrews 1:11

Reading

The acid test of our faithfulness to God is never found in the easy-going, comfortable ways of life, but in the great emergencies, the times of storm and of stress, the days of adversity, when all human aid fails. -Ethel Bell

Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies. —Mother Teresa

Reflection

Much of my struggle and perhaps yours, is the lack of certainty. It would be so much easier to demonstrate faithfulness if I only knew… Or if I could be sure … Or if this wasn’t so risky, stressful, important. (You fill in the blanks.)

But God doesn’t usually show us all the answers. But He is faithful…therefore I can be faithful; you can be faithful because we have confidence and hope in God.

Blessing

May your Heavenly Father help you to believe and thereby to be faithful in all you do, during good times and bad.

Day 4

Contributed by: Marq Caughell, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

Lord, may you find me being faithful. And when my faith falters, will you send your Spirit to lift me up.

Scripture

A faithful person will be richly blessed, but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished. - Proverbs 28:20

Reading

“The soul of a man, left to its own natural level, is a potentially lucid crystal left in the darkness. It is perfect in its own nature, but it lacks something that it can only receive from outside and above itself. But when the light shines in it, it becomes in a manner transformed into light and seems to lose its nature in the splendor of a higher nature, the nature of the light that is in it.” - from The Seven Storey Mountain by Thomas Merton

Reflection

If we are faithful to God, we will gain gifts that truly make us shine. But if I try to grab as much as I can for myself, that will have unpleasant consequences.

Blessing

May your Heavenly Father help you to believe and thereby to be faithful in all you do, during good times and bad.

Day 5

Contributed by: Taylor Fletcher, Worship Leader

Opening Prayer

Lord, may you find me being faithful. And when my faith falters, will you send your Spirit to lift me up.

Scripture

God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind. Has he ever spoken and failed to act? Has he ever promised and not carried it through? -Numbers 23:19

For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but my steadfast love shall not depart from you, and my covenant of peace shall not be removed, says the Lord, -Isaiah 54:10

Reading

Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father, There is no shadow of turning with Thee; Thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not, As thou hast been, thou forever wilt be. -Thomas Chisholm

Reflection

We can have faith, because God is faithful. His faithfulness lays the foundation we need to love him, follow him, and walk with him. Faithfulness is fundamental to the character of God and more sure than the ground we walk on. Being able to fully trust God is the beginning of abundant life and it gives us the strength to be faithful to God and others in return.

Blessing

May your Heavenly Father help you to believe and thereby to be faithful in all you do, during good times and bad.

Day 6

Contributed by: Melissa Schultz, Cypress Elder

Opening Prayer

Lord, may you find me being faithful. And when my faith falters, will you send your Spirit to lift me up.

Scripture

For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.  For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling, if indeed by putting it on we may not be found naked.  For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened—not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life.  He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.  So we are always of good courage.  We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight. 2 Corinthians 1-7

Reading

“Faith includes noticing the mess, the emptiness, and discomfort.  And letting it be there until some light returns.” Anne Lamott

Reflection

I feel like there’s a common misconception out there, something to the effect of “if God is with me in this, then why can this journey be so grueling?”.  But the truth is, God never said it would be easy.  In fact, one might argue that living a life for others, as opposed to living a self-involved, indulgent existence can often feel like an impossible task wrought with barriers and challenges and missteps.  “Easy” was never part of the deal.  That He’d never leave or forsake you, yes.  That His grace is sufficient, yes.  That this sometimes messy and imperfect and heartbreaking journey would be worthwhile, absolutely and resoundingly yes!

If you’re in the middle of a mess, or feel like a new challenge presents every time you put one foot in front of the other, take heart.  It doesn’t mean that you are doing it all wrong.  Be strong in your faithfulness, walking with God even when you can’t see the next step.  Feel all the joys and pains; highs and lows; beauty and heartbreak; and know that you are not alone.

Blessing

May your Heavenly Father help you to believe and thereby to be faithful in all you do, during good times and bad.

Self Control

July 11 - July 17

Day 1

Contributed by: Marq Caughell, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. - 1 Corinthians 9:25

Scripture

They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary. - Isaiah 40:31

Reading

“Souls are like athletes, that need opponents worthy of them, if they are to be tried and extended and pushed to the full use of their powers, and rewarded according to their capacity.” - from The Seven Storey Mountain by Thomas Merton

Reflection

No one is born with self control. It is learned. To get better, you have to be intentional in your practice. You have to want that control and you have to earn it. Otherwise, you can get turned sideways by the slightest breeze. Lord, help us learn to master only ourselves.

Blessing

May the Lord help you to discover the true source of your lapses of self-control and provide the truth to set you free.

Day 2

Contributed by: Taylor Fletcher, Worship Leader

Opening Prayer

All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. - 1 Corinthians 9:25

Scripture

They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary. - Isaiah 40:31

Reading

He came to the sheep pens along the way; a cave was there, and Saul went in to relieve himself. David and his men were far back in the cave…Then David went out of the cave and said This day you have seen with your own eyes how the Lord delivered you into my hands in the cave. Some urged me to kill you, but I spared you. 1 Samuel 24 verse 3 and verse 10

Reflection

1 Samuel 24 is a great story of self control. We learn that godly self control isn’t a matter of our will but a matter of God’s truth changing who we are. This kind of self control also reinterprets our circumstances into what God’s reality is.

Blessing

May the Lord help you to discover the true source of your lapses of self-control and provide the truth to set you free.

Day 3

Contributed by: Melissa Schultz, Cypress Elder

Opening Prayer

All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. - 1 Corinthians 9:25

Scripture

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize?  So run that you may obtain it.  Every athlete exercises self-control in all things.  They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable.  So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air.  But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.  1 Corinthians 9:24-27

Reading

“Self-discipline begins with the mastery of your thoughts.  If you don’t control what you think, you can’t control what you do.  Simply, self-discipline enables you to think first and act afterward.” Napoleon Hill

Reflection

When I think about the moments when I wish I’d acted or reacted differently, I’m almost always flooded with a scenario when I spoke too quickly, reacted immediately, or answered mindlessly.  Often times I was feeling busy or rushed in the middle of a flurry of activity where I felt pressed for a response or comment.  I usually think back and wished I had slowed down to actually consider my response, think through my answer and its impact, and matched my tone to the situation.

When we react without thinking, words can serve as armor or weapons, even if unintentional.  When we think first, give thought to our responses, allow time for processing, and build in the practice of prayer, we are building the “muscles” of self-control.

Blessing

May the Lord help you to discover the true source of your lapses of self-control and provide the truth to set you free.

Day 4

Contributed by: Jacque Poole, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. - 1 Corinthians 9:25

Scripture

Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control.- Proverbs 25:28

For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. -2 Timothy 1:7

Reading

“If you lose self-control everything will fall.” John  Wooten

“Self-control – what lies in our power to do, it lies in our power not to do.” Aristotle

“In that power of self-control lies the seed of eternal freedom.” Paramahansa Yogananda

Reflection

Self-control is multi-faceted, like many disciplines in life. I have realized that there are areas in my life that I have incredible self-control…avoiding caffeine, limiting alcohol consumption, keeping a regular sleeping schedule. However, my successes in those areas don’t give me a pass in areas that are more challenging. Healthy eating is a challenge for me, avoiding sugars, using my time wisely instead of numbing myself with social media or mindless TV. The scriptures and the quotes remind me (again) that my decisions are my choice. God has given me and you the power to choose…and to choose wisely. Let’s get started one decision at a time with the power, love and self-discipline from God. The true beauty of self-discipline is that God is WITH as we move through the challenge.

Blessing

May the Lord help you to discover the true source of your lapses of self-control and provide the truth to set you free.

Day 5

Contributed by: Keith Killen, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. - 1 Corinthians 9:25

Scripture

My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. James 1:19-20

Reading

In reading the lives of great men, I found that the first victory they won was over themselves. Harry S. Truman

Reflection

When I think of self-control, it usually relates to controlling my anger. I prayed for many years that God would help me control my anger. Unfortunately, we feel what we feel and what we feel is almost always related to what we believe. It wasn’t until the Lord revealed the truth about my self-worth in Him that I finally resolved 90% of my anger issues. Oh, I still get angry at time, but not because of what people say about who I am. As Jesus tells us in John 8:32, “Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.”

Blessing

May the Lord help you to discover the true source of your lapses of self-control and provide the truth to set you free.

Day 6

Contributed by: Douglas Poole, Lead Pastor

Opening Prayer

All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. - 1 Corinthians 9:25

Scripture

Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control. -Proverbs 25:28

Reading

You cannot not control your circumstances but you can control your character. You cannot control the actions of others but you can control the choices you make. You cannot control the outcome but you can control the process.     -Erwin McManus from The Way of the Warrior

Reflection

Either you develop self-control or someone or something will control you.

Blessing

May the Lord help you to discover the true source of your lapses of self-control and provide the truth to set you free.

Suffering

July 18 - July 24

Day 1

Contributed by: Douglas Poole, Lead Pastor

Opening Prayer

Lord, I know your burden is light and your yoke is easy. Now help me to accept them as You were so willing to accept such great suffering for me.

Scripture

Brothers and sisters, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy. -James 5: 10,11

Reading

The sun by action of heat makes wax moist and mud dry, hardening the one while it softens the other, by the same operation producing exactly opposite results; thus, from the long-suffering of God some derive benefit and others harm; some are softened, while others are hardened. -Theodoret

Reflection

Sometimes the victory goes to the one who refuses to get out of the ring but stays in and keeps fighting the good fight.

Blessing

May the Lord help you to discern those burdens you are to carry and then joyously accept them such that you experience all the blessings He has in store for you.

Day 2

Contributed by: Keith Killen, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

Lord, I know your burden is light and your yoke is easy. Now help me to accept them as You were so willing to accept such great suffering for me.

Scripture

After he has suffered, he will see the light of life and be satisfied, by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities. -Isaiah 53:11

Reading

Would you be like Yeshua?  Would you take upon yourself His challenge to become His representative in this hostile world?  Are you prepared to die daily to the seductions of the culture and take up the cross?  Then you will have to bear the iniquities of others.  And they will not hesitate to heap them upon you.  Every sinner needs a sacrificial lamb.  Every man knows he must remove his guilt.  He looks only for someone else to bear it.  Are you willing to be that one? Dr Skip Moen

Reflection

We all have burden to carry and they often involve suffering and sacrifice. The difficulty is often discerning which are mine. If we take on burdens that were never meant for us, they will become too heavy to bear. But too often, we refuse to accept those which are ours to bear. This robs us of sharing in the Lord’s work and of experiencing a blessing along with those we were to help.

Blessing

May the Lord help you to discern those burdens you are to carry and then joyously accept them such that you experience all the blessings He has in store for you.

Day 3

Contributed by: Jacque Poole, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

Lord, I know your burden is light and your yoke is easy. Now help me to accept them as You were so willing to accept such great suffering for me.

Scripture

And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. -1 Peter 5:10

Reading

Being hurt, hurts, but believe it or not, you’re actually designed to process it. You were created to go through grief and experience uncomfortable feelings so that you can rise above your pain. - Dr. Henry Cloud

Reflection

Suffering is part of life. It may come in various degrees of severity from sadness or disappointment to heartbreaking tragedy. I have learned that God uses suffering to teach us things that are not learned in books. I have witnessed suffering that seems incomprehensible, yet those suffering have found heavenly resilience. God has restored them…the suffering is part of who they are but there is steadfastness and strength in those who have suffered. May Gods walk with you.

Lord, lift our eyes to you, from whom our help comes. We ask that you walk with us through the dark and lonely valleys. Fill us with your love, strength and steadfastness. Let us see and feel your presence. Amen

Blessing

May the Lord help you to discern those burdens you are to carry and then joyously accept them such that you experience all the blessings He has in store for you.

Day 4

Contributed by: Marq Caughell, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

Lord, I know your burden is light and your yoke is easy. Now help me to accept them as You were so willing to accept such great suffering for me.

Scripture

When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you. - 2 Corinthians 4:17

Reading

“The more you try to avoid suffering, the more you will suffer, because smaller and more insignificant things begin to torture you, in proportion to your fear of being hurt. The one who does most to avoid suffering is, in the end, the one who suffers most.” - from The Seven Storey Mountain by Thomas Merton

Reflection

I am searching for a place where I no longer bring unnecessary suffering upon myself, but I am also no longer afraid to walk through suffering because I know that I walk with God.

Blessing

May the Lord help you to discern those burdens you are to carry and then joyously accept them such that you experience all the blessings He has in store for you.

Day 5

Contributed by: Taylor Fletcher, Worship Leader

Opening Prayer

Lord, I know your burden is light and your yoke is easy. Now help me to accept them as You were so willing to accept such great suffering for me.

Scripture

Since Jesus went through everything you’re going through and more, learn to think like him. Think of your sufferings as a weaning from that old sinful habit of always expecting to get your own way. Then you’ll be able to live out your days free to pursue what God wants instead of being tyrannized by what you want. 1 Peter 4:1-2

Reading

“The problem is that contemporary people think life is all about finding happiness. We decide what conditions will make us happy and then we work to bring those conditions about. To live for happiness means that you are trying to get something out of life. But when suffering comes along, it takes the conditions for happiness away, and so suffering destroys all your reason to keep living. But to “live for meaning” means not that you try to get something out of life but rather that life expects something from us. In other words, you have meaning only when there is something in life more important than your own personal freedom and happiness, something for which you are glad to sacrifice your happiness.” ― Timothy Keller, Walking with God through Pain and Suffering

Reflection

Without suffering in this world nothing would matter. When we see others suffer it tears at our hearts. Why is that? Because people are incredibly valuable. Suffering is an awful instrument but God uses it to develop character and value in our lives that we could not have otherwise.

Blessing

May the Lord help you to discern those burdens you are to carry and then joyously accept them such that you experience all the blessings He has in store for you.

Day 6

Contributed by: Melissa Schultz, Cypress Elder

Opening Prayer

Lord, I know your burden is light and your yoke is easy. Now help me to accept them as You were so willing to accept such great suffering for me.

Scripture

We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed. -2 Corinthians 4:8-9

Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.  -Galatians 6:2

Reading

“I thought faith would say, I’ll take away the pain and discomfort, but what it ended up saying was, I’ll sit with you in it.” -Brene’ Brown

“Empathy has no script.  There is no right way or wrong way to do it.  It’s simply listening, holding space, withholding judgment, emotionally connecting, and communicating that incredibly healing message of ‘You’re not alone.’” -Brene’ Brown

Reflection

I once started asking a question to a circle of my friends and family.  The question was this, “when have you felt the most loved?”  Surprising to me at the time, almost every answer came out of a time when they were knee deep in pain, suffering, or loss, and someone showed up in a way that made them feel enveloped in love.  It wasn’t always a grand gesture.  In fact, most of the time it was the simplest act of kindness or just sitting with them in the mess of it all.

“When you’ve passed through your own firey trials, and found God to be true to what he says, you have real help to offer.  You have firsthand experience of both his sustaining grace and his purposeful design.  He has kept you through the pain; he has reshaped you more into his image…What you are experiencing from God, you can give away in increasing measure to others.  You are learning both the tenderness and the clarity necessary to help sanctify another person’s deepest distress.” -David Powlison

Blessing

May the Lord help you to discern those burdens you are to carry and then joyously accept them such that you experience all the blessings He has in store for you.

Wisdom

July 25 - July 31

Day 1

Contributed by: Jacque Poole, Cypress Tribe Member

Opening Prayer

Lord, reveal to me the wisdom I need to fulfill your purposes in this world. May I not walk in the ways of the world, but in the revelation of your truth to me as I walk in obedience.

Scripture

“But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.” -James 3:17 NIV

Reading

I will seek wisdom. I will listen to the counsel of wise men. The words of a wise man are like rain- drops on dry ground. They are precious and quickly used for immediate results. Only the blade of grass that catches a raindrop will prosper and grow. The person who ignores wise counsel is like the blade of grass untouched by the rain—soon to wither and die. When I counsel with myself, I can only make decisions according to what I already know. By counseling with a wise man, I add his knowledge and experience to my own and dramatically increase my success. I will seek wisdom. I will be a servant to others. A wise man will cultivate a servant’s spirit, for that particular attribute attracts people like no other. As I humbly serve others, their wisdom will be freely shared with me. - Mastering the 7 Decisions, by Andy Andrews

Reflection

Wisdom is defined as having experience, knowledge and good judgment. Consider whom you want to speak into your decisions. Will their experience, knowledge, and good judgement add to your own?

Blessing

May God help you attain the wisdom to see His will and purpose for your life and the power and strength to fulfill it.

"What could be more hapless than a man controlled by his own creations? It is surely easier for a man to cease to be a man by worshiping man-made gods than for idols to become divine by being adored." The City of God by St. Augustine

Reflection

Nothing that I do or create, or even think will ever lead me to real wisdom. I need something more than even the smartest human could conjure. I become wiser the closer I come to the divine.

Blessing

May God help you attain the wisdom to see His will and purpose for your life and the power and strength to fulfill it.

Opening Prayer

Lord, reveal to me the wisdom I need to fulfill your purposes in this world. May I not walk in the ways of the world, but in the revelation of your truth to me as I walk in obedience.

Scripture

… In all wisdom and insight, He has made known  to us the mystery of His will, according to His kind intention which He purposed in Him…  Ephesians 1:8-9

Reading

Paul reaches back into his Hebrew past to find the Biblical definition of wisdom.  He draws on the book of Proverbs.  He knows that Biblical wisdom is about my relationship with God, not my management of the world.  Wisdom is God’s gift.  It is not something that I find through training or education.  Why?  Because Biblical wisdom is about behavior that is pleasing to God.  It is about reverence for God and His creation.  It is about knowing and doing what God has in mind.  It’s following God’s agenda for my life.

That makes it pretty obvious that you can only get this kind of wisdom from God Himself.  You can’t take a course at school called “God’s agenda for you”.  You won’t be able to pick up a self-help book titled “Your life plan” written by God.  You need God to reveal this direction and information.  And God says He will tell you in exactly the proportion that you are willing to obey what He reveals.  This isn’t an eight-week course about discovering your destiny.  Never be fooled into thinking that you can plan your spiritual path by Greek means.  It’s not education, enlightenment or analysis.  It’s obedience! - Dr Skip Moen

Reflection

Most of the knowledge and wisdom I have acquired by earthly means only reveals my inabilities and inadequacies at using it for worthwhile purposes. Oh, it may help me in acquiring wealth, power and/or gaining recognition, but what good is that if it does not accomplish God’s purpose for my life. You will never experience true joy and peace until you recognize God’s purpose for your life and then follow it obediently.

Blessing

May God help you attain the wisdom to see His will and purpose for your life and the power and strength to fulfill it.

Day 6

Contributed by: Melissa Schultz, Cypress Elder

Opening Prayer

Lord, reveal to me the wisdom I need to fulfill your purposes in this world. May I not walk in the ways of the world, but in the revelation of your truth to me as I walk in obedience.

Scripture

Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding, for she more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold.  She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her.  Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor.  Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace.  She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her; those who hold her fast will be blessed. Proverbs 3:13-18

Reading

“I can know things down at this level that I can’t on the chaotic surface.  Down here, when I pose a question about my life—in words or abstract images—I sense a nudge.  The nudge guides me toward the next precise thing, and then, when I silently acknowledge the nudge—it fills me.  The knowing feels like warm liquid gold filling my veins and solidifying just enough to make me feel steady, certain.  What I learned (even though I am afraid to say it) is that God lives in this deepness inside me.  When I recognize God’s presence and guidance, God celebrates by flooding me with warm liquid gold.” Glennon Doyle

“I have learned that if I want to rise, I have to sink first.  I have to search for and depend upon the voice of inner wisdom instead of voices of outer approval.” Glennon Doyle

Reflection

I feel like wisdom isn’t an endpoint.  It’s not a well-defined destination, or a goal…to become wise.  Instead, it’s a process.  We have opportunities to gain wisdom daily…to sink into the knowing…to recognize God’s presence and guidance.  And although we will never “arrive”, maybe minds and hearts that continually strive to move toward the next right thing is a beautiful destination in itself.

Blessing

May God help you attain the wisdom to see His will and purpose for your life and the power and strength to fulfill it.
